Stuck accellerator

I have a 2006 Prius with 35000 miles. A stuck accelerator happened to my wife today. She was on an on-ramp entering Central Expressway here in Dallas. She entered the lane and the car kept accelerating. She first thought about the cruise control and touched the brakes. - no change, She then hit the brake hard with no change. She finally tapped the accelerator and the accelerator released. She was scared. A previous post got me thinking. hmmmm I have weathertech mats. I looked at it and there didn't seem to be clearance issues. But - if the left side of the mat shifts up past the dead pedal on the left and you put pressure on right side of the mat ( such as normal pressure with your your heel ) the front edge of the mat lifts slightly. If you happen to be accerating at the same time the accelerator will catch. I saw this happen. ( the car was off - in my garage ). Pressing the accelerator to the floor and leting the spring pull it back up clears the mat. It would be hard to get something (such as a foot ) under the pedal to pull it up while driving. I also guess that reaching down and pulling the mat back would help. I plan to pull the mats back and get some way to keep them back. I also may consider trimming them.

Can you cut some holes and use the same hooks already in place
for the stock mats?

If she really was standing on the brake pedal and the car didn't stop, then the brakes are faulty, no matter how stuck the gas pedal was. (I would bet that she was actually not pressing the brake hard enough.)

 

I call BS on this thread.

Look at the number of posts for the people who have experienced this "problem".

I've tried two tests on my Prius

1. At a stop, left foot on brake, right foot on gas pedal. Floor gas pedal, eg "force charge." Car does not budge

2. At the posted speed limit, prepare left foot over brake. Floor gas pedal, slam left foot onto brake pedal. Car stops, quickly too

Last summer, I tried experiment #1 with my FJ. It burns out pretty good!

 

has anyone had this happen, last nite while light braking car suddenly sped up for a second, i thought it may have felt as if the generator suddenly stoped and i was only feeling the actual brakes being applied, this happened twice within 20 minutes of driving but not again for the rest of the trip, aprox half an hour. 2005 with 22000 miles.

 

Ross, the only time that I've felt that happen is:
1) bumpy roads where the tire loses traction or gets bumped into the air enough to tell the brakes to switch to standard brakes.
2) regen disable at the transition between 6-7 mph.

 

ah ha i bet it was loss of traction, the roads were loaded with pot holes, thanks for the reply.

My FJ will also do that over rough roads: it's the ABS

 

It happened to me, but it was MY fault. I didn't hook the carpets in. Live and learn.
