Re: Kumho Power Star 758 Tires- Observation after one set at 45k miles and new one just on!

Bought my 2005 used in Dec 2006 w/ 25k on it. Car came with the Kumho Power Star 758 (a typical dealership cheapie tire for used cars). Had previous positive experience with Kumho Ecsta's on my 1991 MR2 Turbo, so wasn't too concerned about them. Ran them at 38/40 per all the other comments posted (note that Tirerack is in error, sidewall max is 44 psi) but also did not notice any difference in MPG with higher pressures. Note I am a "light" hypermiler, meaning I hypermile and the wife doesnt. Combined fuel econ since inception (25k) is at 50.5, approx 60/40 highway/city.

Fast-forward to last week. Car is at 71k. Decided it was time to replace the tires. Did the research (Radial X, Hydroedge, Harmony, MXV4 Energy, Assurance, Integrity, Sumitomo...) Just can't get past the fact that I loved the 758's. Drove a couple of San Diego Prius Club member's cars with MXV4, Radial X and Sumo's. Gotta tell you, I like my ride and response better. Plus, I smoke them all on MPG.

Tires were $270 all in, with mount, balance, warr certs and lifetime service. First tank and recording right at 50, but that is likely a bit high (I am usually about 95-97% accurate).

Anyway, long-winded love story for the 758's. Note the critical thing about them (imo) is that they weigh a mere 18 lbs. Sometimes old tech is better. Note that the 758's claim to fame is that they were the oem old school Mini 12" tire (and I believe the only one still available). Oh, and the guy at Discount said I probably could have gone another 5-10k on them. 50k is not bad for under $300.
