Do the hoods really help with the glare?

A little. I have some pretty extensive review of the hoods under the 2 threads in the commercial sponsor section (one for the original, one for the leather).

It doesn't help if the sun is coming from a low side angle or from behind. It probably helps a little for the higher angles.

I have noticed that mine is starting to sag in the center. I have the leather version so I was a little surpirsed. I'm keeping an eye on it and may have to do a little 'customizing' if it continues to sag.

Uh-oh! I hope they won't sag too much. I just ordered a leather one yesterday

You can just soak the leather in a mixture of Elmer's type glue, 50% water, 50% glue. Or shellac. Mold into desired shape, let it dry over night.

    cheers

It's not that difficult to make your own.

I have the plastic hood and find that it helps considerably with the glare. Of course depending on the sun angle, some of the screen can still be washed out but the screen is much more visible with a hood.

I don't have any step-by-step pictures, (there really aren't many steps) but I can show you the plastic hospital pan I used. It was exactly the right width for the MFD.

1)Hospital pan 2)Pan upside down 3)Pan with pattern marked 4) Pan with pattern marked 5) Box cutter and reusable putty to hold the hood in place

I cut the pattern with the box cutter, touched it up with sandpaper and a dremel tool, spray painted it, and used small spots of putty to hold it.

    Hope that's helpful!

By the way, the putty came from Lowes, and the marked pan is just for this post. I was more careful with my original hood.

I seem to be having trouble keeping the attachments in the post. I'll put them in a separate post.

I like the hood as a base for my radar detector. I have the hood velcro'ed to the dash mat and the radar detector velcro's to the hood. It works and looks nice. I have the plastic hood from eBay for 2 years now. Its great. It matches the black plastic already there. No velcro it just fits in the slots on the side perfect. This one from this guy:

You can still get it in a nice, finished plastic from Prius Hoods through the PriusChat Store ($35 shipped):

Or you can make your own out of neoprene or black oak tag (poster paper). Me, I just used 75 cents worth of neoprene:
