I drive an '06 package #3 in central Maine, still wearing its Michelin X-Ice snow tires. For my last tank of gas in March (down to two bars), I averaged 56.3 mpg over 400+ miles, according to the trip computer. That's the best so far, although I haven't been below 51 mpg since getting the Prius in January. Consider me a happy camper. :)

Hi. I'm the new guy. August 2005 blue Prius. Technically it's my wife's but I've been driving it for the past month.

Here's my March 2006 fuel efficiency report:
    First Tank 342 Miles/average 48.2MPG (75% highway/25% city) - Union 76, 87 octane, $2.67/gallon
Second Tank 487 Miles/average 59.7MPG (10% highway/90% city) - Union 76, 87 octane, $2.89/gallon - ran the "ten tickmark" fuel gauge down to zero ticks!!!
    Current tank 182 Miles/average 58.1MPG (just city so far) - Union 76, 87 octane, $2.93/gallon

I've noticed a couple of things in regard to maximising one's fuel efficiency when driving a Prius:
    • fuel efficiency not as good in colder weather than warmer weather
    • fuel efficiency notably higher when cruise control is used religiously
I keep bugging my wife to master the cruise control (c'mon, it's really really easy to use!) if she wants to decrease the fuel consumption. I have noticed that it is possible to drive on level ground at 43MPH solely on the electric motor (until the batteries need recharging) when the cruise control is employed.

I am fortunate in that I don't need to use freeways for my commute to/from work, and that really helps reduce the fuel consumption.
