I had a trailer hitch receiver installed on my '06 today. I had heard that U-Haul had an aggressive price on this item, so I checked it out and found they sell a hitch for our favorite car for only $120. Sunnyvale U-Haul quoted me 1/2 hour install for $37.50 which brought the total with tax to $167.35. They did an excellent job installing the hitch. Best of all, it seems the hitch is the nicer "Curt" hitch with the safety chain loops! This is a killer deal if you want the smaller 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver as I did. I also highly recommend Sunnyvale U-Haul if you're in the the S.F. Bay Area. Their phone number is (408) 735-7060.
My U-Haul has a trailer hitch but told me I had to go to the dealership to get the "wiring harness" that goes from the car to the trailer. May I ask where you got such a thing? Thanks, Randy
Thanks, JB! That's an awesome price since I paid the same for the hitch itself, and still had to install it. You are also the first one to confirm that the u-haul product is in fact the Curt hitch. I'd heard all these great things about the u-haul hitch, and now I guess we're all talking about the same product! As for the wiring question - there is no factory harness for the Prius as far as I know. The good news is that you can make your own from a Camry harness: http://www.darelldd.com/ev/prius_trailer_wiring.htm
I bought the U-Haul hitch and it is indeed the curt hitch. It even came in a CURT box!. It costs only $120 and was $10 freight for a total of $130. You can order it on U-Haul's website. I installed it myself easily, but did run into the bolt being too long problem that darelldd mentioned on his site. The main difference between the U-haul deal and the Curt is that the U-Haul hitch does NOT include the ball mount touuge insert, pin, and clip. If you need these, a real curt might be a better deal, but for my bike rack I don't need them, so it saved $$. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(darelldd @ Apr 24 2006, 01:17 PM) </div>
is this the hitch that caused the melting of the rear bumper cover? because the exhaust pipe exited right on it.
Yes, this is the "melt your bumper" hitch designed and manufactured by Curt. I had my exhaust tilted down by 15 degrees or so to avoid the problem. Some have heard from Curt that they will modify their design. They have never contacted me after I first told them of the design flaw. I have no idea if they have modified their hitch design or not.
Any new data on hitches for a Prius (2006). I am moving soon and want to pull a VERY SMALL trailer (also very light) with a few personal items. I am seeing advertised hitches for about $170, self-install. Does U-haul still do a hitch for the Prius? Thanks Don
Re: Trailer hitch for under $170 installed! this is a really old thread, but here's 2 helpful fats- 1. the curt hitch has been redesigned so it no longer melts anything. 2. i saw a prius with a uhaul hitch yesterday, and it loked like an 06 prius.
Re: Trailer hitch for under $170 installed! According to their website U-Haul has it available for $134.95. You can go here: U-Haul moving supplies: Custom hitches and enter your year and car type. They have the instructions available online too. The instructions indicate it is made by Curt, it is the redesigned version and includes the Ball Mount, Pin and Clip.
