I've had a fun time reading through archives from 9 years ago... hunting down and confirming details from that forgotten past. It's fascinating to get to reminisce about Prius. What's to come is very exciting too. Are those of your awaiting the 2010 ready to participate in that rather significant chapter of automotive history? Anywho, please help be fill in the blanks for this: Thanks! .
In the second section "Motor"...is that MG2 I presume? Be nice to specify for those who might have some basic understanding that there isn't just one motor.
Finally, why not list the alternate wheel sizes for '04-'09 and '10 if that information is apropos to the chart? Otherwise, I really like the chart...it's nicely laid out and is interesting to compare the progression of the data. It would be nice to see cargo capacity, wheel base, external sizes, and even base prices listed to complete the picture.
Just noticed...MG2 torque is LOWER in the 2010 than before...by almost 50%? Is that accurate despite the higher HP & kW rating? Somehow that doesn't seem to make sense.
The chart was intentionally left simple, so it could serve as a multi-purpose source of info... used on the last page of User-Guide to entice desire to learn more and as an intro on a new detail document I've hoping to create. You know, present Prius in basic terms of efficiency then draw people into the engineering wonder by explaining how it's achieved without overwhelming. That starts by pointing out the components involved and their relative size/power. Next is to describe how they interact with others. The fact that both electric devices can serve as motor & generator makes more than just intro stuff. The chart shows that there are 2, not just 1 like with some other hybrids. .
Never noticed how much less Camry-Hybrid was than Prius, eh? Prius is setup like that now too, offering the dual-stage MG2 operation. You'll like that and won't miss all the torque, since it was a bit on the overkill side anyway... which likely contributed a lot to the traction-control being so protective. .
So how does that differ? How does it make up for the torque deficit? (i.e. how does it go about multiplying the torque)
I realize you like to keep things simple, but when it creates confusion, or worse is unclear or inaccurate (like calling MG1 a motor and MG2 a generator when they are both, both) you add to confusion and misinformation. It's just as simple and much more clear to simply identify them as MG1 and MG2. Again, if you start them off with misleading information they must be retaught. I realize you don't like to correct these things, but it's very easy to be both clear and accurate without creating confusion. The way the chart is currently is neither clear nor accurate IMO. Really? It's not clear to me from the chart that this is different than any other hybrid. Like I said, I know you don't take well to critique on this sort of thing, but it's what I think. In addition, the issue about tire size/width, etc. It's really irrelevant to the hybrid components that dominate the rest of the chart. If you insist on including that information then I think you should include other specs like size, weight, cargo capacity, MPG etc so the "picture" of the cars is complete. IOW, you're showing both how the engineering of the hybrid system advanced while still growing the vehicle size/capacity, etc. Look, it's a great chart in many ways, I just think it could be reasonably improved to better achive your goals and provide even more information while not confusing or getting too complicated.
Multi-Display information has been that way since 1997, showing only a single motor/generator. Toyota's choice remains. I may add the labels though. Remember, some are already confused by the competition greenwashing. KISS is always a challenge. Primary use is identified in the chart breakdown. Feedback from newbies would be helpful... hint, hint. .
Yup, and how many times have I had to clarify that over the past 5 1/2 years?? Way more than I'd like to say. A simple diagram that shows both MGs would not confuse anyone...and would make the HSD much easier to understand IMO. I agree, but I don't think you need to assume "stupid" with the KIS part. And I refuse to believe it would confuse anyone or anything to put a simple (MG2) and (MG1) next to the respective "motor" and "generator" areas.
I agree, which is why my document images do. In fact, the chart includes labels do now too (spelled out though, rather than abbreviations). But Toyota's display in the car itself doesn't. Like we were told in Detroit, they leave much in terms of spreading knowledge up to us. Personally, I enjoy the opportunity. .
Thanks for the change. Frankly, I like helping spread knowledge too, but it's helpful if those seeking knowledge don't first show up with misinformation at least some of the time!
So, did you double check the Torque of MG2 in the 2010? What's your source...that just seems so odd to me on the surface that it would be so much less. Would like to hear one of the technically informed explain that.
In the paraphrased words of Einstein: Everything should be as simple as possible, but not simpler. Tom
Toyota itself, the Japanese website for the 2010 Prius. So, it's a pretty reliable source. PRIUS VIRTUAL MOTORSHOW click: OVERVIEW click: SPEC .
What years correspond to Original, Classic & Iconic? My wife and I just bought a used 2007 Prius 3 months ago and we love it. However, as I’m new to this car, I’m not up to date on all the history. Thanks to all on Prius Chat. You all have been a great source of information. (Just blocked my grill last weekend and have really noticed a difference.)
