First time since 1978 a new Pope will be named.

After the election (a long process that begins April 18), the elected former Cardinal (no World Series jokes please) selects his own name.

Besides having great personal meaning, it's a great way to review the lives of the saints, from whose names the pope will choose one (or two).

Any guesses? A Harvard Lampoon-type knock-off called Not The New York Times in 1978 [edited to correct the paper's name] guessed that it would of course be John Paul John Paul.

I went with George Ringo, but this is extremely unlikely. So is Charles.

No penalty for posting your guess, except 50 points off for Camillus.

I'm going with Benedict (XVI) this time. Yours?

The pope doesn't have to be a cardinal according to catholic law, he must just be catholic.

    How about Leo or Pius

True but that hasn't happened anytime in the last 600 years or so; they've all been cardinals at the time of their election.

Good names. I'm going with John Paul III, though (creative, no?).

Anyway, I've ruled out the following (pretty much for sure):

    Adolph
    Pope (redundant)
    Ozzie
    George Bush (taken)
    Kodak (trademarked)
The Catcher in the rye (copyrighted)
    tag
    efusco
    Beyonce
    Sirhan
    Bono
    Beetlejuice
    Osama
    Marlboro

    Tag,
Had to check the bbcode to make sure you weren't up to the old "you" tag again!!

So you're pretty sure I've been ruled out, huh! Damn, now I gotta find something else to do on Sundays.

I like "STEVE" yeah that sounds good Pope Steve the First

Which translates to Innocent XIV (XIII died in 1724) and Stephen XI (X died in 1058).

I think the term "interdiction" perfectly applies to the name "Devil's Advocate" for a Pontiff. Sorry about that. Thanks for playing.

If you are registered to read Chicago Tribune articles, the list can be found at Popes and Their Dates for your information.

[The title is my creation. Just like "Girl to Grab" would be an intriguing title for Volume 8 of the encyclopedia.]

Are we discussing the requirements as spelled out in Canon Law or the pragmatic and political considerations which affect the selection in the conclave?

Am I wrong in thinking we discussed this and I brought up this possible name? Perhaps it was with Ken.

The name it will almost certainly not be is Peter, which is a shame because it is such a good name, but I think too many people would think that was a symbol of the second coming.

Of course, that might very well scare a few people back into Church.

John Paul III is a possibility given the love this one has engendered and to show consitency of message.

    George Herbert is out.

    So is George Foreman.

One would hope that Pope Mel is out too.

Don't know about Pope, but my favorite (real) cardinal name was Cardinal Sin. Think he was from Thailand or somewhere in that general region.

Back on topic I have to admit when I saw the subject heading Free Word Association took me to "George, & Ringo" too.

Jaime Lachica Cardinal Sin is the retired Archbishop of Manila, Philippines.

Gee, for a Jewish guy I certainly know almost too much about the Catholic church.

I never expected something appropriately humorous to accompany such an event. You can decide for yourselves how appropriate.

The news of the papal election reached the U.S. during midday, so I was able to see some television coverage while I got my lunch. The usual daytime dramas were interrupted, on one network, with an "ABC News Special Report."

The news was momentous but brief, and the report concluded with the image of a well-known book, and the announcement, "We return you now to 'All My Children,' already in progress." :D
