I am trying to get my voice commands to trigger my Prius. It seems to very often either not recognize or incorrectly recognize what I say. I have been working with "warmer" and it usually doesn't get what I'm saying. I've found that if I say it more like "warmmmmer" it has I higher liklihood of getting it. But it's hard to say it just right.

Does anyone else have this problem? Or is it something I should bring into the dealer? I swear I'm speaking so clearly any diction coach would be please. I try saying the words all kinds of ways. If you see me driving and contorting my face to say things differently please don't think I'm that crazy. Maybe just a little.

Here's a typical very sane discussion twixt my and the Prius.

    Me: "Warmer"
    Prius: "Changing to FM1 band"
    Me: "Warmer"
Prius: "This command only valid in Map mode"
    Me "Warmer Damn it"
    Prius "Turning off Audio system"
    Me "Warmmmmer"
    Prius: "Raising Temperature"
Me: "About time you bubble headed boobie. I'm already at my flamin destination. But you know that."

It seems to work more easily if I say "Raise Temperature" but I want to say "warmer". Is that too much to ask for?

    LOL!
Yes, it can be difficult. Best thing, usually, to try is to speak as normally as you can. When there are multiple words slur them together more like you'd do in casual conversation.

Careful enunciation usually does NOT work.

Some commands just never work for me and I have to use work-arounds.

Dont dispair - I have the same problem too. (In fact, it's gotten to be a joke with my friends - my friends who are of the female persuasion often have much better luck with the system than I do, being of the male variety).

I've stopped using it until I see some help! I've looked at the manual and have tried to speak as it wants, but to no avail, apparently.

Maybe try speaking with more of a Japanese accent?

Isn't there a list on the MFD labeled "Help" that has the commands the car will recognize ( looking at page 126 of owners man. )? I have not played much with one but do remember being shown a list somewhere that helps. And to let you all know, I had problems when I went to class on it also. It wouldn't recognize my command but another tech in class could get it to respond to everyone of his. Guess it didn't like me,

I find the voice commands don't work very well with simple stuff like raising or lowering the temperature or volume. However, they do seem to work well for more complex commands like turning on POI's - like "I'm hungry", "Coffee shop", or "Rest area" - or changing map modes - "dual map", "single map", etc...

The msot ipmrotnat tnihg to rmebemer wehn unsig vcoie reocginiton is to clraely euncnitae ecah prhsae in the nvagiatoin stsyem's niatve bnariy lnagague.

...and keep in mind that it's recognition ability pales in comparison with that of the human brain.

I've stopped using using voice recognition in my Prius because most of the useful commands (e.g. "Go Home") are recognized less than 10% of the time.

 "Ernestine's" responses to my verbal requests from time to time are a source or amusement... as you may have discovered. [We named our Prius NAV lady "Ernestine" after Lili Tomlin's telephone operator character after experiencing her sometimes innane, unrelated responses].

I have better results speaking in a normal tone of voice and am getting about 65% accuracy overall... and 35% chuckles. I do have problems when I have "chatty" passengers.

I was feature to my husband on Saturday and he was having fun it. "I'm freezing" caused the temperature to increase to 85. "POI off" works more often than any other command we tried. It's a fun way to kill time on a trip if nothing else.

As funny as your response sounds MGBGT, it has some truth.. i recently attended a meeting with a fujitsu 10 rep. and he actually told us that the voice recognition works better with an accent.

Mine has always worked very well with a very high percentage of success. Just lucky I guess.

Random words and obscenities are fun to occupy your self on a long drive. I have almost had to pull over a few times because I am laughing on occasion. Belle does not recognize obscenities, being the shy, quiet, blushing, lady that she is. Do you suppose she is offended by my language?

Here's what I've found: In order to get the voice recognition to work better, go to the Map screen and hit "I Agree" on the disclaimer.

This enables the system to recognize all the voice commands, not just a subset of them which seems to cause the system to get all confused.

See if it works for you.

I found it very frustrating that this wasn't mentioned in the manual.

That proves it, the Prius IS female! You must tell her you agree with her before she will listen to you!

Well, cussing at it in Japanese doesn't work either. :D I get stuff like POIs displayed, Map off, etc. It gets worse as I enunciate. I finally gave up. I get it to work about 50% of the time. What is weird is that in my wife's prius I have no problems. I wish there was a setting that allowed us to program our own voice commands.

don't enunciate, it is a natual language voice recognition system...unless it doesn't like Texan accents :)

I've found that for temperature commands, leaving off the "Temperature" makes it work MUCH better.

IE: The manual suggests "Temperature 72 Degrees". But I've found that if I say "72 Degrees" without "Temperature" it works about 95% of the time.

    Hope that helps.

The other night a friend asked for "Brothels" and my Prius declared "Showing Courthouse icons". Apparently it's trying to enforce some sort of moral code.

Go directly to jail. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

Welcome to PruisChat Pest! Have some points! :)

Yeah, I have a hell-of-a-time getting voice commands to work. My 6 year old son thinks it's hilarious to see what it THINKS he is saying. My typical experience goes like this:
    Me: "Thai Food"
Prius: "Now showing ski resort icons"
    Me: "Argh!"

The other day I found that saying "dog kennels" would always get a response of "showing hotels." I thought that was odd, but maybe the Japanese keep their dogs in nicer establishments.

It's also strange that "Lexus Dealership" works, but "Toyota Dealership" doesn't. It's not just the voice recognition, if you look under "automotive" on the destinations page, there is no listing for Toyota Dealerships, just Lexus.

What I really find frustration is when the Nav Lady doesn't understand a word, she just keeps guessing. Even if you repeat the word exactly the same way, most of the time she will make a totally different guess. This was especially frustrating when she responded with something like "seeking up," or "setting destination to home," and before I could hit the cancel button something undesirable had changed. Now I keep my finger on the button, and if she responds incorrectly, I push the button again before she takes the unintentional action. If I give up on getting her to understand, I just press and hold the button until she says "voice recognition mode is cancelled."
