This has been bugging me for a while. There is the center hump in the prius. It seems to be squared off too. The car does not have a driveline. All cables run under the car. What is in that center hump? It's not a camel.. there is no water.. if so.. let's drain it.. i want better mpg so. anyone know if that thing is hollow? If so, i want to pass things through it.
I guess I better get under there and check out how close those HV lines are. I'm planning on mounting my XM SKYFY2 on the center hump. Wouldn't want a little sheet metal screw hitting any of those power lines.
yeah.. you can see the orange cables under the car passing through a clear plastic casing towards the driver side. Exhaust? last time i saw, i didn't think it ran that high.... *scratches head* i'll crawl under my car again and look. Either way, there is still leftover room in that thing. Even if the exhaust does run in the general area. I'll look.
Could be structural too. Take a flat piece of sheet metal - it's flimsy. Use a press or a forming tool to put a crease or two in it, and it becomes much more rigid.
i remember hearing it was cosmetic a long time ago. This is why i'm asking. Give this post a few days. It takes people a while to find it. Not everyone is logged on everyday like me. Priuschat is like an I.V. line for me it pumps the green into me But.. like i said.. i heard it was cosmetic. The car simply looked too weird without it.
The exhaust is situated in there just like other Toyota's. If you raise it up higher, I wouldn't think you would not get that much air flow around it. And putting it higher into the tunnel would put it closer to the floor pan and you know what is on the other side, the interior and carpet. Wouldn't want to fry your carpet, now would you, :lol:
Also, if the exhaust is there, then it would allow a flatter underbody. Most of the car underneath is flat with carboard umm.. sheeting to smoothen out air flow so anything that can be tucked away will be tucked away.
The exhaust (and converter) are in the hump, allowing the rest of the body to remain flat for better aerodyamics while maintaining the 4.9" ground clearance. Also, from a point below the console, the parking brake cable is transfered via a lever assembly from the interior of the car (on top of the hump) to the exterior and two cables run from this point to the rear brakes. The hump thus allows the lever for the parking brake to be protected from road debris.

I thought having the hump made the bottom of the car look and act like the bottom of a ski to keep the car tracking straight....
1. Exhaust system 2. Wiring from battery in trunk to motor up front 3. Adds structural rigidity to floor plan 4. Gives center passenger in rear seat an excuse to complain.
2. wiring.... wiring still runs on the drivers side you can see it when you are under the car. 4.Gives... hey.. at least it's flat. Anyone ever sit middle and have that hump be round? is there any good place to put your feet? no.. they slide off. lol
