RI just got EZPass (yippee....for the 1 tollbooth in the entire state, which happens to be in my town). I just got the thing in the mail but am wondering where other Prius owners have put theirs (pics would be great ). I think my two choices would be above the mirror, but that's in the area of the windshield with the black polka-dot screen and I don't know if the EZPass will work there. Otherwise it would be behind the mirror from my vantage point, but then the darn thing will practically be in the middle of the windshield. Advice anyone?
You could have requested the black rectangular one that is affixed to the license plate. However, in my experience your unit can be practically anywhere in the cockpit and still be read. Leave it on the dash or in a cupholder if you don't want to affix it to the windshield.
In PA I've seen it centered L-R in the windshield about even with the mirror. I put it more on the passenger side of the WS but still behind the mirror so it doesn't affect my vision. If you don't like the velcro strips, and especially if you have more than one car, look into an EZ-Clip for each car and you can move the pass around as needed.
I use that black EZPass holder EZ-Clip that pdhenry mentioned. It's the best looking of the EZPass holders (many of the others are tacky looking; and I think that it looks best in black). Note that these EZPass holders mount by suction cups which will not adhere to the black polka dot screen because the polka dots are slightly raised. Because of that, I mount mine a little bit to the passenger side so no suction cup touches the black polka dots. Here's a photo of my Green EZPass as mounted:
We have a similar transponder setup for toll roads in southern CA. I attached the transponder using Velcro adhesive strips to the black dot area behind the rear view mirror.
We have SunPass in Florida..it seems a similar system. Mine is behind the mirror in the black dotted area. I like it there because it does not take up any visible windshield space for the driver and can not be easily seen from outside.
Thanks everyone, I just wanted to be sure it would work in the "black dot zone". I'll give it a try tomorrow!
I put mine behind the rear view mirror on the passenger side so that it is invisible from the driver's seat. Works fine. Does your state have a green EZ-Pass Program? In New York you get a discount off your tolls if you are driving a Prius or other approved vehicle.
I believe that the instructions that came with my EZPass expressly said to only mount it on the clear part of the windshield by the mirror -- not behind the tinted portion of the glass, not on top of the dash, not held in my hand, etc. The instructions said that if I mounted it anywhere other than the prescribed area, it might not work all the time. I'm a bit of a worrier, so I followed the instructions.
