Life of auxiliary battery 2005 prius

It really depends upon the ambient temps in your area, how often you drive the car, and whether you've left the cabin lights on overnight or not.

If you live in a moderate zone where you neither have snow on the ground in the winter, nor >100 degree weather in the summer, drive 15K+ miles per year, and never have excess battery drain, then it would be reasonable for the battery to last seven years or more.

If you have snow in the winter and/or 120 degree F weather in the summer, drive <5K miles per year, and have occasionally drained the battery, then the battery may need replacing soon, before the coming winter arrives.

I think i'm beginning to have issues with my Aux battery,i'm a Taxi driver with a 2006[June]185,000kms,the only drain on the battery would be radio/data head,taxi meter and roof sign but i've noticed lately[because i work nights]that if i turn the car off [ headlights turn off leaving parking lights on]for a few minutes the parking lights go very dim and the LIGHTS ON indicator on the dash is practically invisible but i'm not having any problems[yet]starting the car up again,the weather here in general is mild and the fact that i'm driving nights might be a reason i'm not having problems with starting[i'm off tonight so i'll see tomorrow]just yet,
I would appreciate your expertise on this one,

Hi Phil,

I agree that you should replace the 12V auxiliary battery ASAP given the symptom that the exterior lights go dim after just a few minutes. This is especially important since you earn your living with the car and probably would not be happy if it fails during your workday.

By the way, note that two different size batteries are used as 2G original equipment. US Prius without the Smart Entry/Smart Start feature are shipped with the smaller size battery with a white translucent case, while Prius with that feature are shipped with the larger battery with a black case, which is an inch or so longer. The US Toyota dealer price for a replacement runs from US$130 to US$160.

Since you are located in Ireland, you probably have the smaller battery installed. After you've replaced it, please let us know which original equipment battery was installed and the price you paid for the replacement.

Also carefully note the battery terminal polarity. When the battery is positioned so that the terminals are closest to you, the positive terminal is on the left. Make sure that you are not sold a battery with reversed polarity (Classic Prius has the same size battery as base 2G but the terminal polarity is reversed since the Classic battery sits in the left side of the trunk.)

 

it might be worth taking the battery out and having it tested at a place like sears
before spending the money to replace it. testing is a free service at most places.

another way to see how good the battery is i found out, is that opening/lowering of the power window
in on mode (press power button twice) vs ready mode (press power button once with foot on brake)
the worse the battery is, the slower the window will operate!

a lot of owners here like to read the voltage with a meter or the mfd screen's voltage checker, i think
that is just being lazy and not a 100 % reliable test

toyota dealers are the same way. they are lazy too




things you will not lose when removing the battery:
garage door opener codes (rear view mirror)
anything involving the bluetooth, this includes the phone book, phone settings, etc etc. those are stored in flash memory

 

i do not know about nav, both those boards have flash memory and sdram memory...

the bluetooth board has zero sdram, everything is in flash

 

One way to insure that NO memory is lost is to connect a SLA 1075, spade terminals battery before diconnecting. This battery is 12VDC with 7.5 AH Capacity. It also makes a nice emergency Aux battery. These can be picked up for $14 - $20.00:attention:

Last few days we've been having -9 celsius and feels cold.

All the stereo and heater stuff was all off. In the morning the dash was dim and majority of lights on but dim. It wouldn't go into ready mode and i couldn't even
remove the key since mine is not smart key.
I jumped it and started just fine.

i replaced with the black aux battery which is 1.5 inches longer than the white battery which comes with base model prius.

There is a little bracket and i just bent it about 1/4 inch with large pliers and the
replacment battery fits perfectly.
I paid $180 instead of $150.
Since this has more juice I think I'm okay for a few more years.

Congratulations on your good work, glad to hear that the original battery bracket would fit the larger battery after bending. Makes sense to upgrade to the larger battery with higher AH capacity especially in your cold climate.

CA$180 = US$147, so it seems that you paid a reasonable dealer parts dept price.

 

I have a 2005 Pkg 6 and recently replaced my aux battery. I live in FL where heat takes its toll. The battery lasted three and a half years and died suddenly in my garage. After jump starting and driving to the dealer, it tested fine, but I still replaced it. Haven't had a problem since. The dealer battery cost 165 bucks and has a two year full replacement warranty and then its pro rated up to 5 years. Good luck!

 

Hi. I replaced the auxulliary battery 2 months back. Since then, my remote (lock/unlock) and Power window function would not work. Bought it from the dealer ($190) and changed myself. Any idea why the keyless entry stopped working? I tried reprogramming w/o success. Thanks. Arun

 

Try disconnecting the battery negative for 5 minutes. Then perform the power window initialization after powering up and reconnecting. See http://jaygroh.dreamhost.com/prius/... Bulletins/Initialization of Power Window.pdf

It should not have been necessary to reprogram your keyless entry. If it does not resolve with the battery disconnect/reconnect (i.e. rebooting the car), then try replacing the fob battery. If that doesn't resolve it, you may need to take it somewhere, dealership or otherwise, that can hook up a scan tool and check the immobilizer ECU for stored keys.

Yes, and it is a CR2032 which you can buy at your local drugstore.
