Where is the receiver for keyless start? When I try to start with fob in pocket, I get the key error light on the dash. If I put the fob in the slot, I could start the car. I took apart the console today and was wondering if this is the reason why the keyless system would not allow the car to start with the fob in my pocket. Thanks for the help.
Sounds to me like the battery inside your key fob needs to be replaced. When the keyfob's battery dies, I think one of the symptoms is the car can't detect it unless you insert it into the slot.
Or you have other stuff in the pocket that interferes with the signal: a cellphone, or a big mass of coins or metal keys.
diagnosing smart keys does the wireless lock and unlock buttons on the actual key lock and unlock doors? yes - key is fine go to next step no - stop , replace key battery, replace key does the key in smart mode open the three doors? lock car open hatchback with hand on door handle lock car open passenger door with hand on door handle lock car open drivers door with hand on door handle lock car yes it worked - your key is fine go to next step no - try a different key, verify the 'key button is not disabled go to your dealer, replace the battery in the key can you turn the car on, sitting in the drivers seat? yes - key is fine no - if the key will lock and unlock doors but the engine will not start, then you probably will need to go to the dealer to have the antenna checked. i believe this is located in the console box, heh **** advanced step **** If you are nervous about locking your keys in the car, then it is ok to roll a window down this step requires the use of two smart keys. ( or one smart key and the mechanical key) do not use the mechanical key to lock the doors, just to fetch your key another way to check key detector is to lock the car with a key in it. using the mechanical key is not valid for this test. using the remote control key lock/unlock is not valid for this test leave the key in the 5 detection zones and try to lock the car with the power door lock on the inside of the door handle and slam the door. drivers seat passenger seat left rear passenger seat right rear passenger seat hatch back door this may or may not lock your keys in your car!!!! but it is a good step in diagnosing problems if the antennas are good then the car should automatically unlock itself when you try and lock the car with the keys in it if any of the antennas are bad then you will lock your keys in the car *** advanced smart door test *** place key in hatch back area close all doors lock with mechanical key walk away come back with no keys and put hand on door handle all doors should unlock YES - key is fine, rear door sensor is fine NO - smart door turned off by the dealer, bad key, bad key battery, bad sensor the repair manual states that the #1 first step in diagnosing the smart key, is to simply check the voltage on the 12v battery. if it reads 11 to 14 volts, then continue checking other things the # 2 step would be to check for dtc codes with a engine scanner / scan guage if those two steps are fine, there are no codes, and the battery reads > 11 volts and the key is not turned off, or the battery is fine in teh key, then take it to the dealer keep quiet and pray that he does not charge you for busting it when you took apart the console box
