 Yesterday, I was bragging about my TOTALLY trouble free 06, @ 70,000 miles. Today, 70+ mph in the HOV lane, ding, all manner of warning lights, including the dreaded red triangle of death! I got off the freeway, everything looked OK, no leaks, smoke or other means of excitement. I drove less than 2 miles to Pasadena Toyota, and dropped the car off. The service rep just called, and said the inverter collant pump needs to be replaced. I said "that doesn't sound good ($$$$)". He daid the three sweetest words I know, "covered by warranty". Whew, I guess the extended warranty was worth something after all. I was thinking I wouldn't need it before it expired. Anybody else see inverter coolant pump failures about this mileage? It gave no visible signs of trouble, no leaks, smells, etc. Brag not, lest ye get the red triangle of death!

The inverter coolant pump is one of the weak points. Yours is not the first to fail.

Wouldn't that be covered under the 8/100,000 warranty? Inverter is part of the Hybrid system, and it can't run without the inveerter coolant pump.

My understanding was that the extension was for all hybrid relared parts?

My inverter coolant pump quit just as I was accelerating to get on the freeway. The dealer said that the mechanical pump was leaking too. Since I'm way out of warranty with 135,000 miles on my 04 it cost $1,000 for parts and labor.

is the 2004 much different then the 2007? according to my warranty booklet the inverter is good for 150,000 miles. if this also covers
2004 i guess you were ripped off?

maybe someone should post each year along with what tier it was

SyCo, thanks for that. OK. now that i read the previous post, my remaining question would be this.....................

it appears that there might be some fault in the pumps of the 2004/2005's...........HAS this problem been taken care of in the pumps of the late models? i have an 08. is the design of my pump different or the same? has it been updated/redesigned?

The TSB (linked in a post from Galaxee) shown in the thread referenced by SyCo (above) suggests that there were changes made to the pump in 2006. The TSB notes a couple of VINs that would be the point in model year 2006 where the change was made. So, as I understand it, 2006 Prius made after that VIN (cars with higher VINs) would have the redesigned part.

Nice to know that the inverter pump is covered under the Hybrid warranty. I think my '08 has an 8 year 100K mile warranty. Checking under the hood, I think I will need to add inverter coolant (pink) pretty soon.

    N3FOL,

What did you see? I would think that having to add inverter coolant in an '08
would indicate a leak or very heavy duty use and should be cause for concern.

I've got an '08 with 13K miles. Is there something beyond the recommended
service items -- oil change, rotate tires -- that I've missed?

the inverter coolant pump is not covered by the hybrid warranty. it is covered by the 5 year/60k mile powertrain warranty.

Low coolant for a 2008 is not normal, unless it started low.

Inverter pump followup: My car IS an early 06, Jan. 10 purchase. I received no recall notices, and it is the original pump. I wasn't clear just which warranty covered it, only glad that it was covered. For those in the LA/Pasadena area, Toyota of Pasadena fixed it with no apointment on a busy Friday morning, provided door to door shuttle service, and the car was done the same day, at the time they promised. I'm not a fan of dealer visits, but I was impressed with how thay handled my problem. BTW, I saw 6 or 7 new Prii, and even a used 07 on their lot, if anybody is tired of waiting lists, etc.
