I Beat the EPA--Post 'em here

Well Well Well, I topped my 2008 Prius off with I bar left showing on guage. I went 531 miles and used 9 gallons. Comes to about 59 mile to gallon. Thank you people for your input. I was driving through down town Orlando like the rest of mankind, dogging punching it and the likes, and still wound up with this milage.. I had no regard for pulse and glide at that time. But otherwise it is becoming second nature.

 

wow. thats some crazy mileage on a car that already has great mileage. i really look forward to getting a prius! (if i do get one that is, which i will mostly do). cool tips, btw.

 

jellybean83---Raising the tire pressure to 42/40 along with the 'free one time' alignment under warranty made nearly 8 mpg difference in my mileage last summer. The picture on the left shows the results of the next full tank of gas -- 602 miles on 9.8 gallons at the pump... the next 2 tanks were over 58 mpg as pumped...so I was on a roll....kept A/C off as much as possible... my commute is just over 18 miles each way and 15+ is on I-66 NoVa from Chantilly to Arlington, with over 200 ft change in altitude... In the AM, just about the time my Prii is ready to go into stage 3, I usually run into stop and go traffic (yes - in the HOV lane) so it helps to get into stealth mode thereafter. Often have a 'backed-out' 5 minute bar on the display -- no fuel burned. Besides the tire pressure I have run with the grill blocked in winter and 1/2blocked in summer but nothing else fancy -- no EBH or Scangauge....March thru Sept mileage was just under 8K mile at 54.9 mpg as pumped and included 2 ea 600 mile round trips to Ohio interstate all the way usually at 65mph.

So if you take the plunge and get a Prii, Hope you have as good of luck with increasing your tire pressure -- ps - Have not noted any unusual tire wear on the OEM tires doing this (plenty of tread left)and I will hit 25K on the odo next week.

In over 13,000 miles, I have averaged just over 52 mpg. I have had several fill-up at 56 mpg. My worst one has been 45.
I drive a 2008 model.

 

After 2 1/2 years, got my best mileage this summer. Best tank was 61.5 mpg and most were in upper 50s all summer. I've tried a bit of the "pulse" driving technique to charge up the battery more.

 

Current tank @ 250 + miles (1950 total) = 54.3

 

best tank (582 miles) was 61.6 (by actual fill-up), or 64.7 (by gauge on the MFD)! That was in September. It took me a while to learn how to drive for mileage, when I first got the car (July of 2007). So I'm slowly bringing my lifetime FE up. It's at 51.2 now. But my average from February to now, has been over 55. My goal (for now) is to bring my lifetime average to 54MPG. That would be double what my old Accord got. I'll check back in, once I meet that goal!

 

I consistently run around 28 mpg highway which is above epa for my car - a '97 BMW 540i 6-speed. Haha.

 

This shot was taken coming home from Murphy's CA to Angels Camp CA last Saturday. I never thought I'd see this! My mileage overall was pretty crappy (I'm guessing around 50)

 

This tank was achieved at temps averaging around 80 degrees F in mixed suburban/urban daily commutes of about 21 miles back and forth to work in NYC and an undetermined amount of miles running errands around town. Mixed terrain, hwy speeds up to about 53 mph. The tank only took 8 gallons.

Just prior to Detroit Connection, my best winter tank completed. 611 miles / 60.2mpg. Now the temps are back up . . . 70's & 80's ~ so this tank will be even easier.

 

I just went through my first tank of gas on my new 2009 Prius. 422.6 miles on 8.17 gallons of gas, 51.72 MPG (dash computer showed 53 MPG). Car now has 461 miles on the clock and looking forward to mpg increasing as the car breaks in.
My commute is 62 miles each way, 40+ miles highway and 21-22 surface streets, temperature this week has been in the 70's with no rain.

Even with less than 500 miles on the car pretty happy so far. I traded in a Corvette so it will take some time to get used to the blinding speed of the Prius but it is better than I had expected.

3rd tank on my new 2009 prius. 392 miles over 7.734 gallon equals 50.69mpg. Yay!

 

Wow, I'm starting to get the hang of driving this little thing. I just filled up my 2009 after 2300 miles total.
486.7 miles on 7.15 gallons equals 68.07 miles on this tank!

I thought it was a mistake but average of my 5 tanks (including this one) comes out to 55.8 mph which is what the MDF shows for total average.

May 23, '09: Best mpg over a "long" stretch ... 58.7 mpg / 356.4 miles.

May 25-29, '09: Best mpg on a "multi-tank" road-trip ... 50.7 mpg / 1628.1 miles.

Dec 19, '08 - Jan 10, '09: WORST mpg on a single tank of gas ... 38.2 mpg / 249.7 miles.

Aug 4, '08 - Jan 6, '10: TOTAL / LIFETIME mpg as of last fill-up ... 48.4 / 14,311.7 miles.

May 25, '09: Greatest distance travelled on a single tank ... 453.2 miles; I usually fill up with at least two pips still showing ....

Lastly and for what it's worth ... low-temp / winter driving mileage SEEMS to be somewhat improved over last year. This is our second winter of owning Mithril, so perhaps that improved mileage following the car's "break in period" is a valid point during the colder months as well.

LAST YEAR, our primarily 'round town driving during winter months produced per-tank mpgs of 38.2 / 39.5 / 39.6 / 41.7 ... listed here from worst to best ....

So far THIS YEAR, our 'round town driving during winter months has produced per-tank mpgs of 42.4 / 43.6 ....

Why is there such a diference in avg. mpg on screen and actuall what is used ?

 

There's not. In my experience, tracked carefully for over a year, the cumulative difference is now about 2.3%. The flexible fuel bladder often results in significant variation in single-tank calculations and, therefore, often renders them inaccurate.

 

This was hard work. So far so good. I'm gonna try and stick it out till it's time to fill up again.
