2004 with 131,000 miles - the HV battery and the 12v are both doing fine. Traction battery failures in an NHW20 (2004+) have been rare.

I haven't seen any posts here on PC from anybody whose hybrid system battery has died. Has anyone else?

 

I have only seen 1 instance of a Gen 2 (04 +) battery failing. It was replaced under warranty, but the dealer gave the person a difficult time of it because they had the EV mod.

I have seen a few instances of Gen 1 batteries failing, mostly on PTS (Prius Technical Stuff) Yahoo discussion group.

There were design changes to the battery cells that should make the Gen 2 batteries more robust than the Gen 1 batteries.

 

Hi All,

That denied warranty thread was for a mountain driven Prius, where there was a hill in the Stage 1 area. In stage 1, the battery is used almost 100 percent, and its most likely at low charge from the previous driving. In such situations, waiting a minute parked, but in "ready" would help. It would get the car out of stage 1 warmup, and allow the engine to be used for power the car up the hill.

As many people have already pointed out, you're not likely to get representative data here as the failure rate is so low. I can't remember where I read this, but I remember seeing a statistic somewhere indicating that the failure rate is basically vanishingly small for the Gen II cars. That's not say that batteries don't fail (either on their own or as a result of an accident), it's just a very rare occurrence.

12V aux battery swapped out at 2 years of age - was working fine and still used as an emergency ham radio battery - always kept on a float charger in the garage - occasionally, charged with batt charger at 12V / 2 amps for 2 hours.

Sorry, but you aren't going to learn much.

Of the 43,704 members here (which is just a small fraction of actual owners), most that own a Prius don't have anywhere near the amount of years or miles it takes to be concerned about replacement. At 5 years and 106,500 miles, mine is still going strong.

And of course, you need a basis of comparison. What is the expected average lifetime of a non-hybrid anyway? The observations I've made locally is 9 years or 150,000 miles (whichever comes first).
