Greetings fellow NY Prius owners, My trusty Prius is about to turn one year old so it's time to get it inspected, and I got some questions: - All they need to do is plug into the Prius' OBD-II and take some readings, right? - Where in northern Nassau or Queens would you recommend I take my Prius to to get the inspection done? I'm still kind of wary about taking my Prius to a regular-car mechanic who might or might not know what he's doing. Thanks in advance for helping out a fellow Priusian!
That's correct, they just need to read the OBD-II port. The safest bet is to bring it to a dealer, same charge. I've bought it to a regular mechanic once before, and they did ok. I saw that the program in their computer asks if the car has the smart key function. I guess the state was smart enough to make the test program compatible with all cars. But I had to tell the mechanic how to get into Ig-On without starting the engine (tap power button twice without press on brake).
Hi Justlurkin, Agree with Scotty. Just take it to the dealer. The cost is the same. But wherever you take it to, make sure you only pay the reduced 1 year old inspection fee (I think it's only like $10), instead of the much higher regular fee (what is that now ... $35, $40?).
Thank you fellow New Yorkers for the quick reply! Tomorrow I'll make an appointment with Star Toyota on Northern Boulevard in Bayside to get this done. Looking forward to another great year with my Prius! Thanks again!
One more thing at the one year mark: If you haven't done so already, make sure you take advantage of the 1 year/20,000 miles wheel alignment warranty before it runs out.
