Brake pedal is sticking, won't retract all the way

    When coming to a stop in my 2005 Prius the brake pedal will not fully disengage. If you put your foot under the pedal you can pull it back a touch, releasing the friction on the system. As you accelerate forward after stopping, the car also seems to release the friction created by the sticking pedal.

    I went to the dealer to have it looked at. They seemed stumped. After power flushing the brake system fluid they returned the car to me. It did very little to help. What now?

    If the dealership couldn't fix it, I would take it to a different dealership, or better yet an independent shop that is familiar with a Prius.

    You need another dealer. If that doesn't provide satisfaction, bump the problem up to Toyota.

    I've provided an exploded parts diagram. Could the problem be as simple as a faulty brake pedal return spring?

    Seems like the first thing to check. Second in my mind would be play/wear in the clevis, pins, or a collar. After that would come some sort of problem with the master cylinder that is making it stick.

    Backing up, this assumes that the pedal action is the problem, and not the stroke position sensor (or loose screws holding it in place.)

    Thank you for the response. I am presently looking at the spring thing. I took it off and it appears to me, weak. Also it has some kind of a black plastic tube inside. Looks a bit odd. I want to return to the dealer and have them look at it. My first response is to hand bend the old spring to increase the tension. Better judgment says take it back and order a new one.

    the last time i took off a tension spring off a brake system it was a freaking bear to get back on...and that was in a 94 corolla....... weird that a prius' spring would give out so quickly
