When your doors are open and there is no other sound in the area.

Seriously, it isn't. The sound is solely for your own personal enjoyment.

Which is why many of us have turned it off.

thanks so much! I've been wanting to get rid of that "beep" for sometime now!! Followed the directions, and they worked. Now I can hve peace and quiet when I'm backing up without that incessant beeping.

    Thanks again,
    Ed

    Backup Beep killer steps

I found one important step was missing, the first:
    (Disabling Reverse Beep)
Press and hold the brake pedal.
Power on the car, Cycle ODO/TRIP, stopping on ODO, Power off the car.
Power on, within 6 seconds, hold ODO for at least 10 seconds.
While still holding ODO shift into Reverse and back into Park.
"b-on" shows on odometer display, press ODO to cycle to "b-off". Done.

    Mine already is.

Look at installing a back-up beeper in the rear tail light.

Which company makes a beeper that works with the Prius backup lights?
    Thanks,
    Mario

You can't use a back up beeper light bulb. You have to physically install a beeper. You can get one at radio shack. All told cost about $10.00 and takes less than 30 min.

There is a sticky on it somewhere.

on ebay there is a universal back up sensor that sticks to the reverse lights and a sensor senses the white light and then beeps. any idiot can peel off & stick this on, but keep in mind that this will diminish the amount of light that the reverse light gives off making it harder for you to see objects behind you while backing up (especially with tinted windows).

And since who knows how those cheap ebay reverse beepers will stand up to repeated gas station car washes, don't bother. Instead you should only park forward-facing in your garage, when you are in parking lots, either back into the spot or pull through the 1st spot so your car is facing forward in the 2nd spot, thus eliminating the time you are in reverse.

Since this thread was originally dedicated to helping you eliminate the annoying reverse beeps inside the cabs, there is also a trick to eliminating the annoying seat belt beeping that involves almost the same steps, just do a google search for it, or maybe someone can post the instructions. I'm not telling you to drive w/o a seatbelt, but its nice to be able to drive off and put the seatbelt on a few seconds later w/o the annoying beep.

now if only there was a way to engage ev mode in the U.S. w/o voiding the warranty ? . ? . ? . i have the stupid engine coming on automatically after 7 seconds.

call me a control freak, but does anyone also wish there was a way to engage "engine constant on" mode to charge the battery? I was driving thru the rockies and I'd get up 1/2 up a mountain to a flat spot where i'd like the battery fully charged, instead it just went to about 2/3 full to maximize fuel economy, so when I met the next incline my battery didn't last long. Although I live in flat michigan, i don't recommend the prius to anyone living in mountainous regions until toyota gives us total control of our hybrid.

I want 3 modes: normal hybrid mode, engine always on mode, and ev mode. any1 agree?

ON e-bay i found a replacement light bulb for 7440 with a beeper and a halogn light. It fits in the light assembly with a little bit of sanding and then it gives you a back up alarm and then disarm the inside beeper. works well.;)
