Wow, I seemed to have had a stupid moment. It is a Silver Pine Mica '09 package 2 from Harrelson Toyota.

I spoke with other dealers around my area and they either quoted a higher price or were no longer even taking orders from people.

What dealership did you get your quotes? It seems like it's hard to bargain in the Bay Area due to demand.

Anybody have any luck on getting a good deal in the Bay Area. I am deciding between Prius and Honda CRV, if I can get a deal on Prius, I will definitely buy it, otherwise, CRV is my other choice.

I have a 2007 Honda CRV. Why do you want that? It is not economical. Mine gives just 22 mpg, which includes 80% freeways and 20% city. It is a good SUV, but for everyday purpose - spending more on gas!

You only get 22mpg. I saw somebody on CRV forum that get's about 30mpg on 2WD (most likely hwy driving).

Supply in the Bay Area is very good. Pleanty of dealers without waiting lists selling Prii at or below MSRP. Many dealers even have stock on hand ready to go now.

Sunnyvale Toyota is selling for under MSRP, but they do have a waiting list.

Gilroy Toyota has offered me non touring(because they didn't have any touring in stock) for $500 off MSRP with no bogus add-ons or dealer fees.

Bingham Toyota in Fresno offered us a classic silve touring for $1000 off MSRP if we were willing to buy it that day(8/31) but it was the last day of the month.

Check craigslist list. There are a bunch of dealer adds advertising in stock with no additional markup. Jut a few months ago, there was nothing on craigslist that wasn't asking $3 to 4K over MSRP.

With oil prices going even lower and the fall season approaching, there should be a lot more supply and a lot of deals under MSRP again.

I just bought a prius today!

    Prius Base Model With #2

Invoice: $23,345 (includes 575 for package 2, 199 for carpets, 720 dest fee)
Rear Bumper Applique: $69 (what is this?)
Markup: $500 (buying at "$500 over invoice")
    Tint, gas, ?: $450
    Subtotal: $24,925
    + Tax, title, license, doc...

    Location: Phoenix, AZ

    What do you guys think?

One thing that's so confusing to me is the 'invoice' price. On Toyota.com it says that the MSRP for the base Prius in my zip code is $23,375, the package is 575 and the delivery charge is 720. That's $24,670 (and I am paying less than that when you count the tint, which I need).
However, what's confusing me is that online it says the MSRP is $23,375 (+ package 2 and dest fee) but my dealer/other dealers are telling me the INVOICE is $23,345 (but that includes package 2 and dest fee?).

Yet I read somewhere, maybe here that the real base INVOICE is $21,524. Then you add 575 for package 2 and 199 for carpets and 720 dest fee and get $23,345.

I know I'm rambling but I guess what I'm saying is, what does INVOICE mean really? Is it the absolute rock bottom price that does not include the package and dest fee or does it include the package and dest fee?

If they told you the "invoice" price was $23,345, they were lying to you. You paid MSRP + a little more from what I understand of your post. Forget invoice pricing at this point when dealing with a Prius. So far, EVERY dealer I have received quotes from has used MSRP and been absolutely inflexible with that total. Some have even quoted prices $2000+ more than MSRP. If you have further questions, check out Edmunds.com or cars.com for information regarding pricing.

Rear Bumper Applique: $69 (what is this?)-- Unless I am mistaken, this is the black strip of plastic on your rear bumper that is supposed to protect your bumper from scratches that come from setting stuff on it when loading via your hatch.

I know I will be paying MSRP, but my question is about the extended warranty. I have ordered and they told me last week that my prius will be here this coming week or on the next allocation in a couple of weeks, I just want to go in there and since there is no negotiating on the price, I want to be able to possibly either negotiate the price of the extended warranty or know that I can get one for less. I saw a post from a few years ago about 990 for the extended warranty to priuschat warranty, is something like that still available?

    Jeska & physicsdude,

Yes, the $990 extended warranty is still available here (look for the "Prius Shop" heading near the top of the page). If your dealer offers to match the $990 price then be sure he is offering you the official Toyota Financial Services extended warranty that is good all over the USA & NOT a 3rd party aftermarket one that is good only at his dealership [or within his region if you're in the SET (SouthEast Toyota) region].

And physicsdude, they're not supposed to charge you for gas (mentioned in your line with the tint). All Priuses are supposed to be sold with a FULL tank of gas (included in the MSRP before any add-ons). That should be stated on the factory window sticker.

    Ken (in Bolton,Ct)

My paranoid side would tend to agree with you. However, I talked with a COMPETING dealer and they said the same thing. They said they could see the INVOICE price for the vehicle (including the package 2 and the 720 dest fee) and that was the invoice price. The MSRP they could see in their computer program for the specific car was over a thousand dollars higher. Also, when I went on toyota.com and did a 'build your Prius' and chose the package 2 to my zip code, it did quote me $24,670. Like I said, I definitely paid less than that.
I did deal directly with the internet fleet department and he did say he'd sell it to me at $500 over invoice.
Either way, I'm happy to have gotten a Prius for the price I did. But I'm trying to learn from this experience because I'll probably be buying another new car (Sienna Hybrid please) in the next couple of years. Specifically it'd be nice to know if this specific dealer was honest in quoting me the invoice price as stated, and if going through the fleet department really did save me any cash or not.
Thanks for all of the replies :)

I paid an extra $2,500 for a 6 year / 100k warranty (good over all us) and about 1k or so for a maintenance contract that covers all scheduled maintenance for the first 40k.
I hear you guys talking about a $900 warranty. So did I get raked over the coals over on that one (I guess the answer is YES)?
The finance guy said he was able to get me the best overall payments per month by charging me 'retail' on that but I guess that was probably B.S.?
Can I demand a refund on the warranty and then get it through your Prius Shop if I want?

    p.s.
Regarding extended warranties I just learned something new. I called GEICO to switch my insurance and they said they provide a 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty for new cars insured with them (have to be with GEICO when the car is under 15k). There's a $250 deductible but still this would be better than if you had nothing and had to, say, replace the A/C at $75k for two thousand bucks. Anyway, just wanted to point that out for anyone who doesn't get the extended warranty.

Based on edmunds.com, invoice price for pkg #2, mats, bumper applique, and destination is about $22,500. Invoice is NOT what the dealer pays. It's just a reference point.

The extended warranty should be refundable within 30 days.

    Thanks 3c3.
I'm trying to think of how to nicely walk in and ask my dealership to give me the $2,500 back for the ext warranty and the $1300 for the care plan. I want to be able to go there for service without a scarlet letter on my file - it's RIGHT NEXT to where I work.
Should I propose they match the price or just tell them I don't want the warranty any more? Also, I got the car on financing and the warranty was included in that. Are they going to give me a check or will they refund my loan company?

Speaking of financing I got 5.8%. Did I get hosed on that too?

OK, so I got $500 over what the dealer pays? It seems crazy to me that invoice is not what the dealer pays. You're probably right though as all of this other stuff seems crazy too.

So what is the price that both dealers quoted me. It's not invoice and it's not MSRP - it's "dealer's cost"?
