My '07 Touring was totaled. Most of the used ones around here are standard models selling for the cost of a new one, and the only used '07 Touring close to me is going for $32k, well over its original sticker. And to get a new one you gotta get on a waiting list. And I'll probably have to fight insurance to get an accurate amount for real-world cost of replacement considering the current market. I may just blow off Prius and get a used VW TDI. Or a new Corolla or Civic. Darnit. I really wanted that Prius to be the last car I buy for the next 10 years.
hang tight. Mine just got totaled too and insurance said they will give full msrp for another 08. We'll see what really happens but have hope.
Don't accept any lowball figure. If they insist make them show you where you can buy another Prius with the same options and miles for that amount.
Even if I get enough to get a new one it is a 3-6 month wait to get it, according to one of my local dealers. I need something to drive within a week or so.
don't neccessarily believe the 3 to 6 months waiting list hype, Yes it is true that there are waiting lists, but they are based on that particular dealer, in the DC,MD area some dealers were 4 to 6 months waits while others were only 2 to 4 weeks of wait, I got my new 08 prius last month without a wait at all.
Good luck My wife and I bought a new Prius #6 and didn't wait, or pay to wait either for that matter... Cash talks... so does not being someone that wants one less than fully optioned. Look around/call around to see who has what and drive to them when they say they have one... 5 1/2 hours after we decided to buy one, we did, and drove it home that night... it can happen to you too.
I have been wondering if the waiting list/demand hype is dying down too. Call around and also check Craigslist, that's where we found our Prius from a dealer at MSRP. The ad said the car was due in by the end of this month. I called, put down my deposit and my wait was 6 days and I had 5 Priuses to pick from! We had to drive to a dealer that was 2.5 hours away, which isn't too far. I got 49.7 mpg in the Prius on the way back on the highway. Not bad for the first drive
many reports here of insurance settlements for WAY OVER original price paid. i totaled my 2004 and got $23,800... this was pkg #1...total out the door cost was just over $22,000....i drove it for 25 months. you should do ok
My Prius was just totaled too. I am fine, a little banged up but fine. I was hit square in the side on the front panel . I am wondering why my side airbags didn't go off. My other bags did but no the side and I smacked my head against the side of the door frame really hard. My head is already swollen. I had 92k on my 2005 but the batteries were perfect (had them checked) and my last two tanks were 50 and 51. I am not sure I can afford to buy new but I am really going to miss the mpg's if I don't get another one.
If new is out of reach go for used. If you get a banger until the 2010 is released the current Prius will likely take a little price dive in the used market, then sell the banger for about what you paid for it.
Not bad advice! I do have to drive clients around in my car so it can' t be too much of a banger. Kelley Blue Balls only gave it about 15,170 as a value because of the high mileage.
The one time a car I owned was totaled (3+ year old Matrix with 85,000 miles), the KBB value was around $8500, but the insurance company gave me around $12,500. I don't understand how that happened, but I gladly cashed the check.
dont rely on gas staying cheap. if you drive that much, get another car that gets at least 40 mpg or you will be sorry. to be honest with ya, with the current options, the Prius is still head and shoulders above the competition
Depends upon your insurance but I would decline a check, tell them you want a replacement car & a loaner until the transaction is completed. If a vehicle is high miles, they try to wiggle out of it, if it is low mileage they try to wiggle out of it. Can't win for losing.
Totaled my 2007 package 6 touring on 3/30/2009. AAA paid out $26,700. It had 77,000 miles. While I would rather have the same car I had, I am happy with the payout. Finding the same car is proving difficult regardless of price.
glad to see that insurance companies are still giving good payouts on the Pri even with gas prices in their currently depressed state. that payout would go a long way towards a new 2010... imho, more than a incremental upgrade by a longshot
