Does anyone know if there is enough depth behind the upper glovebox to mount a DIN sized DVD player to use with a Lockpick 3? I don't mind cutting an opening in the backside of the plastic if there is some room in front of the passenger airbag. I have ordered all the components and now have to find a place to mount the player. I will be using a Valor DV-170 that has a SD card slot for displaying JPEG's and storing MP3's and a USB port for a 2GB jump drive for WMA's. See link at Crutchfield for details. It's has a lot of features for 100 dollars Valor DV-170 DVD/CD/MP3 player at Crutchfield.com

Not the upper glovebox, there's a metal support in the way. but I mounted a half-din PowerCoustic DVD player in the lower glovebox, suspended from the top of the glovebox. I trimmed the actual backside of the lower glovebox door to enable closing the door, concealing the DVD player.

Essentially it's installed such that you can still remove that lower glovebox entirely to access the cabin filter.

Pictures are worth so much more than my description...I'll see if time allows me to get them posted.

Thanks, pictures always help. The other option was to modify the lower center dash panel (some fiberglass work) and mount the player vertically. This would be a real project. I was thinking of dropping in an under dash add on type DIN mount (from the inside) and glassing it into the curved front panel of the cover.
Sounds like a PITA, but could be decent looking if I was patient enough. Lower glovebox would be far easier.

Pictures have been taken. I'll post tonight, if many other moving projects get finished!

Fiberglass would be cool. I've only done my rear cubby 8" subwoofer in fiberglass. Stay tuned...

Why not put it in the little pocket below the factory radio?

ScanGauge has already claimed that space. Not sure if a full DIN DVD player will fit in that space. My second choice will likely be a semi-custom enclosure under that smoked plastic door.

Here are my pics. Had to put this here in the lower glovebox (in her 2005) since the add-on factory 6-disc is below the radio in that pocket.

In my 2004 I put the same DVD player in that pocket below the radio with room to store my 30 gig iPod photo.

    Enjoy!

The door covered slot, below the factory radio will fit a DIN sized DVD player very nicely, and the door will still close.

Finman, that looks like a clean install. I think I should take everyone's advice and mount the DVD below the radio. I can easily relocate the ScanGauge. My DVD player has many threaded holes for side mounting. It should be an easy install.

Well, I took everyone's advice and mounted it in the proper location under the radio. Had to trim the front opening behind the flip down cover. That was the hardest part. Awesome image quality compared to MPEG-4 from a ZEN player. It's a nice unit for 100 dollars.

Hey guys, You have done some great work. Thanks for showing it off. I have yet to receive my Lockpick 3+ (it should arrive in a couple days), but I take it that the input that accepts the video signal is behind the MFD and thus you have to pull the unit off of the dash. Is that accurate? I'll be satiated with being able to use the Nav and phone, but will soon want to install some sort of video input. Where can I find the specs for the video input requirements of the MFD?

With the Lockpic 3+ installed, it will accept any old NTSC video signal. Any DVD player and most of the portable video players will give you video on the MFD.

How did you hook up the power for the dvd player? ripping out the whole radio looks pretty indimidating, although very cool. Looks like in the glove box would be a lot easier install...

Removing the factory head unit is not as bad as it looks. Can be accomplished in 15 minutes after you have done it before. I would think that you are limited to a 1/2 DIN sized player in the GB. Power and ground straight from the lighter socket wires. They turn off with the key.

Racerbob, how did you wire in the power and ground to the lighter socket? Thanks for you time. I really like your finished product and I am looking to do the same!

I just used 3M squeeze type wire taps (pink, IIRC). The power socket hot wire is the one that connects to the center of the outlet. I don't remember the color, but you are tapping into it just behind the socket. Very simple hookup. There is no need for a B+ wire on this DVD player because it has no memory presets. It will turn off when you power down the car.

Im concidering installing the Valor DV-170 as you have done.

Can you provide some detail for the modification you needed to do to the face plate (smoke door etc). What tools would I need to do this?

Also, Im curious about the file support for the usb port, can it play mp3s or is it limited to WMA as noted in the manual?

    Thanks

It will recognize and play MP3's also. No modifications need to be done to the smoked door itself, just a little cutting of the opening in the front of the frame around the area behind the door. It can be done with a razor knife or other similar blade. You will not see the trimmed area once the DVD player is in place.

Back to the question about the upper glove box: The passenger side airbag is just behind the upper glove box so that would be a no-go on extra depth.
