You have probably answered your own question. With current economics (price of the cars versus price of gas), the Corolla makes sense financially as long as:

    1. The price of gas doesn't go up even more significantly
    2. You don't drive huge miles every year
    3. You don't plan to keep the car for 10 years

The intangible is resale value of the car down the road. If used Prius prices stay high like today, the cost of ownership can be low and should be factored. But with a new Prius coming and Detroit finally getting the idea, the current Prius may return to traditional depreciation models in the future, especially if Plug-in models and lithium batterys become readily availlable.

i'm SOOO happy for you, m2mazda6!!! i've also been doing most of my "shopping" via phone / e-mail; the only local Toyota dealer is now selling at $1000 above MSRP ... AND ... "throwing in" something called Ziebart Protection Plus (?) for an ADDITIONAL $1000; no option for the purchaser ... it "MUST" be included ....

and it's great to have you here, Lycanthrope! here's truly hoping your wait will be only 2 to 4 weeks but, at the risk of being rather blunt, i'd suggest NOT "planning" on that. most of those here who have received their new cars had waited 6 weeks or more ... and i'm going on 9 weeks as i post this ....

ok ... i'll guess; because you like "jelly beans"? because you've heard the Prius is every bit as stout as a Tundra when it comes to "off-roading"? because it's rumored that the price of gasoline will dip below $1.75 soon? oh ... i give up! can't you just TELL us?????

welcome aboard, Karl8704 ... and may only good luck be yours!!!

we ALSO requested a Prius in Seaside Pearl initially - with Bisque fabric and Pkg #3 - but have since opened up to MANY other options; we'll gladly accept any of five colors ... would accept any of those colors with EITHER fabric option - Bisque or Dark Gray - and would gladly substitute Pkg 2 for Pkg 3; Pkgs 4 and beyond are a bit too much money for us! as of now, we're on "only" two waiting lists ... but we continue to hope that we MIGHT have a Silver / Pkg 3 in 2 to 3 weeks ....

Well, just was told by our local dealer here in Dayton, OH that we are now 30 on their list. Also told to expect delivery by end of September. We asked for a Blue Mica with Pkg#3. Been on the waiting list since 16 June. Can't wait!

FINALLY!! My Prius is here! I put a deposit for it on April 30 and will be picking it up on Wednesday - after waiting exactly 3 months.
I must say that Ryon Robinson of HOffman Toyota in Simsbury was great. They even gave me a Prius loaner for a week after I had sold my car. So, I got to "practice" driving and learning about it for the past week. Can't wait to drive mine home!

We shopped at Spartan, too. We ordered it May 2nd, and picked it up June 30th. Seemed to be a pretty nice place to buy from.

When I put down my deposit on June 24th, I only knew one person with a Prius; and there were none in my neighborhood.

Things are changing! I know a few with them now, and see others in driveways as I walk my dogs. It'll be my turn soon!

Two weeks ago I drove to West Haven, CT and back. I saw 7 Prii on the round trip (obviously could have missed some). It was exciting! Oh and is the NH Prius owner with the license plate AIM HY on here??? I SAW YOU and waved, te hee.

I am a first generation Prius owner and I am looking to purchase an '08 or '09 Prius.

I don't mind putting my name on a waiting list and waiting a couple of weeks for one to come in, but I absolutely REFUSE to pay thousands of dollars over MSRP for one!

Toyota dealerships here on Long Island are charging anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 above MSRP for the Prius... OUTRAGEOUS!

If this Prius hysteria doesn't subside and prices come down to MSRP soon, I will consider buying a Corolla instead! The Corolla is more than $10,000 less than the Prius, and it gets almost as good gas mileage!

Does anybody else feel the way I do?

Well, I refused to pay more than MSRP as well. as to buying something else, that depends what you have right now. My Honda Civic is 11 years old, getting about 28 MPG, and doing fine, so I can wait.

If you want to drive / fly to pick it up, you can buy from another dealer, nothing says you must by locally. Just a thought; I've never done it but a friend of mine bought her first car (a few years back) 800 miles away. She said the cost of flying here and driving back was much less than the savings.

How odd. I put my order in at Toyota Sunnyvale on 6/12/08. I called 2 weeks ago to get an update and was told another 6 weeks or so.

How much did you pay? Did you go through Tom Ormesher or someone else? Just want to make sure they're playing straight.

It doesn't get almost as good gas mileage if you factor in city driving, but your point is taken that you'd have to drive hundreds of thousands of extra miles in a Prius to make up the gas price savings to justify it over a Corolla.

An alternative is to buy from a deal who may be further from where you live. I'm sure there should be one where the cost of going to said dealer and driving the car back will not be nearly as much as whatever mark up is being done by the nearby dealers and you wouldn't have to "settle" for a corrolla. (Although the corolla is reasonable car).

( PLEASE pardon the length of this post ... i'm just trying to be thorough .... )

    acidburn517 ... part one ...

    acidburn517 ... part two ...

in other words, you said "yes" ... and i'm sure there are many here - including myself - who are quite happy for you! only time will tell if you're satisfied with the decision to "step down" from the Touring ... but, as far as i've been able to ascertain, the "base" should be "just fine" for virtually all of your driving needs and habbits ....

as to the "wait time" from THIS point, mid-August sounds about right to me. that's also about when the dealer said we should be getting ours, and he initially told us it was "coming our way" about the same time you were told ....

so "only" two weeks more, kittykat! we may need to start hunting for the next-senior member of this support group. and, yes ... keep the faith, indeed!!!

i truly wish i could help you here. i've been told very much the same thing - regarding a "Ziebart" protection package ... for $1000! - through the Lafayette dealership; no option ... no choice ... it MUST be purchased along with the car!!! that's why we decided to purchase ours through a dealership about 60 miles from here; on the west side of Indianapolis.

still, my first suggestion would be ... KEEP REMINDING THEM that you REALLY don't want it ... REALLY don't need it ... PERHAPS (???) they'll back off if you just apply some pressure ....

my second suggestion would be ... IF you end up getting the car and having to purchase the "Toyo Guard" package - AFTER the car is in your possession - tell them you're going to recommend AGAINST people going to them for their auto purchases and automotive needs; PROVIDED of course that you, yourself, have some other Toyota dealership not too far away that you can go to for regular maintenance / service-n-such ....

    ( itto-de on the ardon-pe .... )

oh ... if only WE lived in SW Florida; we probably would have had ours nearly two MONTHS already!!!! here's hoping your info will, perhaps, help others to avoid such lengthy waits.

by the way ... thanks for including the photos; quite nice to look at. do the "gold" Toyota emblems represent that the car is a "Leather Package"? that's the first time i've ever noticed those. we're not getting leather, but i think those would look SO neat on the Classic Silver Metallic we're expecting to get soon ... if we could somehow manage that ....

oops ... did i just say "soon"? how careless ....

i believe others have already said this, but the current slow production / inability to keep up with current demand SEEMS to be primarily battery related; those who make the batteries can't keep up with the production of the autos themselves.

anywhooo ... thanks for stopping by; even though YOU didn't have to wait at all ... ya' lucky "_______"
(please feel free to fill in the blank with the word of your choice ... snicker ....)

we were also told 6-8, and are going on 9. just sit tight, gbot ... which i KNOW must be difficult as you're presently carless.

fortunately, we still have "Stone White"; a '97 Stratus with nearly 115,000 miles on it! we're planning to keep it as a second car. it actually does quite well on the highway, by the way. we usually get at LEAST 32mpg - sometimes more than 35mpg ... even with a FULL load! - on longer, highway trips by driving a bit BELOW the speed limit ....

oh ... how i wish i had your readily apparent - and decidedly useful, in times such as these - optimism!!!

that's great news, Graciegirl ... you GOT one! NOT exactly what you wanted, to be sure, but you "saved" about $3K in the process.

we actually ARE trying to hold out for a Pkg #3 ... we declined a Pkg #2 about two weeks ago; my wife decided she didn't like the Driftwood Pearl after all. in all "fairness" ... there's more to the "upgrade" from #1 to #3 than just the enhanced stereo system, but you're absolutely right; that extra $3,000 is QUITE a bump in price.

one of my sisters - in Kansas / Wichita area - sent me that just the other day; i almost fell out of my chair ... PARTLY because i have several brochures just laying around the house; IF there's any truth in the "comic" ... it seems i'm at least partly to blame for the short supply right now ... snicker ....

EDIT FOLLOWS ... it seems the above cartoon / link has been changed ... STILL funny as all get out, but NOT about the shortage of brochures anymore ....

You crack me up Son of Gloin! Makes the waiting just a bit more bearable (which I guess is what this thread is all about)

With having to wait not just for my prius but also for my iphone, I'm about ready to go nuts. (I may already have though... gone nuts I mean)

Heard from the dealership yesterday and they gave me a VIN # !!!! My Touring Prius, pkg.6, Spectra blue will be here no later than Saturday...excited but will believe it when I see it. Today will be 11 weeks! Easily would have bailed out of this deal if it hadn't been for PruisChat to keep me going all these weeks!

    GOT IT BAD.

I have a RED Prius on order.

Driving along today and low and behold what is in front of me? A RED PRIUS!!! Don't know what came over me, I followed, it went into the drive through bank.

Even THAT didn't stop me, I parked and walked over to talk to the driver (female). Once she heard me say, "I HAVE A RED ONE ON ORDER!" she started laughing and we chatted a bit. Good thing there was no line in that drive through aisle! She LOVES hers, and encouraged me to hold out for my color.

    YES!

Not fishy at all. I received 2 different calls from dealers that had deals that fell through. One was loaded with many dealer extras other was just silver versus silver pine. We are holding out for silver pine, been since 6/12 hopefully in 2 more weeks we will have a "lima bean" in the driveway
