While adjusting the audio level up as I went from 35mph side street speed to 60mph hwy speed today I randomly wondered why Toyota ultimately left the promised ASL (auto sound leveling) feature off of the Prius (I'm guessing it's no longer mentioned in the owner's manual since I haven't seen the "how do I get the ASL to work?" question for quite a while). Anyway, I just wondered if the traditional system was somehow connected to the engine RPM or the speed sensor. If the RPM then that would explain why it isn't in the Prius. If it's regulated via the speed sensor then it should be integratable into Prius, but then I theorized that maybe they made a conscious decision to leave it out since the car is so quiet at the times when the ICE is off. If that is, indeed, the case I still wish they'd have included the feature and maybe have it active at speeds only over say 45mph...the point where I begin to notice road noice more than the ICE noise anyway. You could set the sound level where you like it at start up and it would stay at that level until you reached 45mph (unless you manually adjusted it upward), then it would being to increase incrementally as you continued to gain speed, peaking at maybe 75mph. Ok, and I wish the sun was purple too....but it never hurts to dream or wonder...right? I need to go take my mellaril now, excuse me...
Hi Evan, Well, I have just one thing to say (a record for me here), if that medicine thing doesn't work out for you you may have a future in stand-up. I always enjoy your posts and agree that ASL would have been nice but not necessary in my world. OK, so that was two things...but, hey, I tried Take care, Tisza

I recommend Steazine. It really seems to make those annoying voices quiet down. Remember "You are not paranoid is everyone is out to get you"
Have we come down to daydreaming while driving? Not paying attention to the road? Maybe adult ADD? Any way how about measuring the interior db and keeping the radio adjusted to compensate by interior mikes? I have ASL in my wifes Tahoe and really like it. Don't have to keep playing with the volume. Crank it up and it stays up
