I was wondering if anyone has heard if we can get our hands on one of these little suckers. I went to my local Toyota dealer and checked out an '06 Prius and was impressed with the look of the upgraded DVD v5.2. The dealer said that the new DVD disk was not available yet and to check back in a few months. Anyone have any luck? BTW, I am in the Orange County, Ca. Area.
Do you mean 5.1? I don't think 5.2 has been invented yet. I'm 'reasonably' certain that the 2006 disk will not work on a 2005. If it does, it would probably only add a section of Canada to the data, and not display with the enhanced resolution. You would have to replace several components to upgrade to the 2006 capabilities.
Yes you are right. I am the owner of brand new 2006 and the version of my navigation system is just 5.1 but not 5.2
I don't follow your reasoning on this. The resolution of the screen doesn't have anything to do with the accuracy of the database. I sincerely doubt that the DVD is tied to a specific output resolution. Think about pictures you see on the web. What's your screen resolution? How many colors? How many pixels per inch? I guarantee not everyone on the web has your same setup, but we can all see the same pics, more or less. Geographic data isn't pictures, it's mostly numbers with some words now and then, like street names. The Nav computer reads the data and renders an image that the MFD displays. The POI data is more words than numbers, but each entry has location data and type data so the Nav computer can put an icon on the right spot on the map it has rendered. And there isn't any reason Denso would change the basic structure of the database when moving from 2005 to 2006. What's your basis for your assertion?
If someone with a 2006 Prius with Ver 5.1 would like to burn me a copy....I'll tell you if it works with a 2005 Prius.
I, too, am interested in learning more about upgrading my current Navigation DVD (4.2) to the latest DVD (5.1?). Question: I own a 2005 GPS Navigation System w/ DVD version 4.2, is there any hardware limitation in upgrading to the latest 5.2V DVD)? I ask because my Toyota Sale Guy (Northern CA) was under the impression (mis-impression?) that I may not be able to upgrade from 4.2v to 5.1v? Can someone tell us 4.2v DVD users if our Navigation Systems can be upgraded with the 5.1v DVD? And, what is the main difference between 4.2v and 5.1v? (I would assume more accurate mapping information). Thanks!! Marshall
Someone did post how to make a backup copy. I can't seem to find it. I would like to give it a try for archival purposes.
There a few threads on making backups. Here's one of them: http://priuschat.com/page-1-t12312-s0.html
If you don't have something like Nero, you can use DVDDecrypter which you can download here. Pretty simple provided you have a DL DVD writer.
Seems to me there have been several threads already about the 2006 Nav system using different software than the 2004/5, and a disk from a 2006 will not work in a 2005. However, Toyota is supposedly releasing an updated disk for the 2004/5 soon. That will be just a database update. It won't improve the resolution of the screen.
it is now 2008 is anyone able to tell me how you know if you have lastest update for nav system. thanks
Just a quick FYI regarding the upgrade from 4.2 to 5.1: You WILL loose your ability to go into the override menu that allow NAV input while in motion. However, you can build your OWN NAV disk, using the old and new together ... by removing the "loading.kwi" file from your new 5.1 disk, and replace it with your 4.2 loading.kwi file ... it WILL still work. You will need the appropriate DVD writing hardware, and double density DVD disks, as the ISO file is over 8 gig's. That said, you maps will be more accurate, but not necessarily complete. Our local So. Cal community still doesn't show some communities that are less than 1.4 years old ... but the maps are more accurate than the original 2004 disk.
