Started keeping an eye on my fuel consumption a couple of weeks ago after reading a few tips I picked up on this site. I have gone from using around 5.3L per 100 km to a low of 4.0L per 100 km today. I put 205 km on my taxi and was pleasantly surprised to end up at 4.0. Haven't taken the time to convert but it would be around 65 mpg.
Owning 2 Prius taxis I have already cut my fuel bill in half and should be able to cut it by 60% with these tips.
A few of my drivers have taken the challenge to keep it below 4.8 L per 100 km. I have promised them a much bigger xmas bonus if they do.
We have 7 Prius on the fleet and some customers are requesting the hybrid cars.
Thanks for the tips and I am shooting for 70 mpg.

    58-59mpg is great.

do you P&G? do your customers ever complain about your hypermilling?

    Great challenge!

Dang it, I swear Toyota tweaked the 08s or something. How are you guys getting mileage that took me 3 years to hone and perfect?

I have been working on the P&G. I think the fact that I know the city inside out and after 15 years driving taxi I have a pretty good read on the traffic flow. 40 to 50 hours a week does that to you.
Today being Sunday there isn't 1/3 of the traffic that you see on a weekday morning. That made it pretty easy to get some good long glides.
I will be happy if I can keep it around 4.3 L per 100 km on a busy weekday.
That will still be around 62 mpg.
One of my drivers tried the P&G for the first time Saturday night and did 4.5L per 100 km. I was impressed.
I am usually traveling at about 50 to 80 km/hr (30 to 50 mph). No major expressways to deal with. Small city of 150,000.
My customers like the idea of the P&G. I point out to them when the monitor says 0.0 L being burned while we glide. Most don't even notice because when I have a customer in the car I usually only go from 70 down to 60 km before I pulse again.

4.0 l/100 km is 70.7 MPG imperial and 4.4 l/100 km is 65.6 MPG Imperial. Great mileage! The benefits of being able to avoid the "warmup hit". I'm running around 4.7 l/100 km with my short trips, summer operation. Winter is much worse. One tank last winter I saw around 6 l/100 km (40 MPG imperial). Guzzler! ;) Most of the time I was around 5.4 l/100 km.

Congulate Lucky1 for your huge saving :)

Are you working profession in Vancouver area ? 4.0L !! that impressive P&G skill.

I'm still working hard towards 5.0L (partly because I drive 20min/ each way to work & good-portion of trip involve up-hill @ start from Marine to Boardway then travel East toward Boundary) just entering 2nd month of ownership of a 08

Prehaps you can share some tips whats best route to P&G in Vancouver as a professional.

    Thanks in advance

David--- I was wondering what the mileage might be in the winter. We had a record snowfall last winter and with these cars sitting so low in the front I have my concerns. (hard to coast in that lovely white stuff) Shopping for some good winter tires while they are on sale in the summer.
How's Edmonton, I lived 2 blocks from Northlands Park when I was 18 (nice part of town eh!).
You are right about the warm up hit- If I stop for as little as 15 min after going steady for a couple hours I can see a small warm up hit for a few blocks.

Fotomickey-- I live about 5000 km east of you in Kingston. Sorry can't help with the best routes.Love Vancouver though, one of the top city's in the world. I have only been a Prius owner for two months also but drive it 40-50 hours a week. Probably easier for me to get good mileage not having to deal with the expressways. Twice a week I might use the 401 and that would be it for traveling faster than 75 km/hr.
When I do the P&G I pulse up to about 7 km/hr faster than the speed I would normally do and when I let off of the gas a bit I give it enough gas to maintain the glide while seeing 0.0 on the monitor. Once I hit about 5km/hr below the speed I usually travel at I pulse again. I found that if I tried to hard to have a black screen I was losing speed to quickly. For now my main concern was maintaining the 0.0 as long as possible. I seem to glide on the flat stretches of the road about 3 to 4 times the distance of the pulse.Seems to work well and I can't wait to get a few more months of P&G under my belt. I keep to about a 15 km/hr variance in speed. I see some people have more variance in speed but I find it is hard to stay with the traffic flow that way.
My cars are up to 24,000 km after 2 months and are at the broken in point where they say gas mileage improves.
The 4.0 was on Sunday and I think it would be tough to do on a weekday.
The owner of the company had me explaining the P&G to some of his drivers. Hard to get them to care enough with him paying the gas bill.
Some will though just for the challenge.

IC Thanks Lucky1 for quick reply

.... 24000km in 2 months !! thats equal to my 1.5 years worth of driving.

I guest have to wait a little longer to reach 24K or get to know my Prius better & vice-versa :)

ahh.. the differences between Vancouver and other cities. It's the topography I tells ya! haha.

Well from my experiences, 5.0 is good to start off in the YVR area. But hopefully you can get that down to the low 4s soon!!

Here in Victoria, I've just managed to lock in a 4.2 L/100km on a 660 km tank into my spreadsheet. My personal best on a tank. Very exciting. When I started I was over 5 most of the time. Practice makes perfect. Great to here more good taxi stories.

About snow clearance, that was a small concern of mine a little bit last winter, driving through the Rockies to Panorama. Revelstoke's side streets were a little deep in places and the Prius does sit pretty low. Made it through but we were definitely moving some snow..
