XM raising rates 30% to $12.95

    Now the real satellite radio wars begin - I'm kinda happy about this because I was looking for a reason to buy a multi-year plan and now I'll get XMOnline included.

    What is XM Satellite Radio's new basic monthly subscription rate and when does it go into effect?

    XM is expanding its basic service to include more than 150 channels of programming, including Opie & Anthony and 16 channels of Major League Baseball, plus the Internet service XM Radio Online, all for $12.95 a month, as of April 2, 2005. The price change will not affect current subscribers until their current payment plan ends. In addition, consumers have the opportunity until April 2 to lock in the original rate of $9.99 per month for up to one year, or lock in lower multi-year rates for additional savings, The price change does not affect the XM Family Plan; XM subscribers will continue to be able to get up to four additional subscriptions for $6.99 per radio per month.

    I figured that XM getting MLB would cause a price hike. IMHO, I think MLB, which is boring enough on TV and the trashy Opie & Anthony should both be canned. Even though I have a year free on XM, I now wish I would have gotten the lifetime subscription to Sirius when it was available and suffered until the port option makes aftermarket available..

    Well the Sirius offer is still listed on their site:

    "Subscribe for the lifetime of your radio! Yes really, we're not kidding. Pay $499.99 once, forget about bills altogether, and enjoy SIRIUS for a long, long time to come. (Offer ends June 30, 2005.)"

    They did raise the price but it is still there. I'm thinking of getting it if it's still around when the next generation of PnPs come out. The additional subs are still at a discounted rate.

    You know, the sad part is, this will actually save me money each month.

    I pay for one regular subs., one online subs, and a family plan subs. So right now, I'm paying 9.99 for the first, $4 for the second, and 6.99 for the third.

    Now, I'll just have to pay $12.95 and 6.99, which saves me a buck a month. Of course, I still think I'm going to lock in my $9.99 rate for a few years if I can.

    Ah well, it's good for their stock, but bad for their customers - with Howard being at Sirius soon, I think the subscriptions for each service are going to be fairly even now. XM did just launch their 3rd satellite (the first two are degrading quicker than they were expected, so I believe their insurance is going to have to pay up to help launch this recent one, and another soon).

    Take note of the wording on the lifetime offer.

    $499 for the life of that specific radio.
    Subscriptions are based on radio serial number.

    If your radio dies within the year, you may have
    an interesting discussion with Sirius getting it transferred to a new unit.
