When I was in the Army, we already had the HMMWV's. If I recall, they had a 6.2 litre V8 non-turbo GM diesel and a TH400 automatic transmission. Very impressive offroad, until you finally got it stuck The motor was real s***. Most of them were oil burners, and I mean literally, huge clouds of blue smoke. Floor it and *wait* to get to highway speed, holding on for dear life. I've never rode in a civillian H1, I hear they were light years better in terms of highway manners. Especially the last year of the H1 civillian, had a Duramax and Allison auto. The HMMWV's we played with in the Army were lucky to get 10 mpg. In hard driving they got 5-7 mpg You couldn't pay me to ride in one now
I remember driving Hummers in the Army too, and they sure did suck. They wander all over the road, the steering has so much play you are constantly correcting it to go straight. Ours was diesel, but fuel mileage running on military JP8 fuel was abysmal. At any moment I'd rather driver a larger LMTV 5-ton truck than a Hummer. I was never impressed by those behemoths and couldn't imagine why would anyone want to buy them unless they are hardcore off-road drivers (where the Hummer excels).
clciked the link: Hummer Gas Mileage Not Found The mileage data you are looking for never existed, because Hummers essentially get no gas mileage. 10 MPG means that the typical Hummer burns petroleum faster than Saddam Hussein in Kuwait. Please try the following: If you drive a Hummer, sell it. Your penis will remain small whether or not you drive a half-baked knockoff of a military vehicle. Drive something that gets better gas mileage, like, say, a Kenworth. If you reached this page because you're considering buying a Hummer, see the previous item. If you're here just to see what mileage a Hummer really gets, it averages about 10-14 MPG. No, we're not kidding. You could take a Chevy Suburban and tow another car behind it and you'd STILL get better gas mileage. It's quite possible that the Hummer was originally marketed as a joke. Then the designers realized folks were actually stupid enough to buy a vehicle that's too large for 99% of parking spots, rides like a pissed-off camel in an earthquake and has great features like a leaky sunroof, an air conditioner that doesn't work and other fun stuff. If you actually drive off-road, we'll cut you some slack. Just remember that 10-14 MPG figure is for street driving, not off-road. So you'd better bring another car to carry spare gas. Forget About The Hummer --- too funny!!!!!
I had to laugh when a couple of Hummers entered in the Baja 1000 got beat by a couple of Jeep Grand Cherokees that were driven (!) to the race.
