OK, so apparently this is my day for making mistakes. The hole for the speakers in the doors are about 6.6 inches in diameter. 6-1/2 inch speakers do not fit right. I tried 6-3/4 inch speakers and they won't work either. I am thinking of trying 7 inch speakers and seeing how they fit. Do we need to keep the factory plastic mount to fit speakers correctly?

When installing speakers,you know that anything can be made to work. Just how much modification do you want to do. It is always easiest when you get factory size replacements. But when you want to add better speakers and you have a car that is not to popular,you just have to make do with what you can get. I know that this doesn't answer your question,but you probably know that already. Good luck :wink:
Xraven, I just went through the same ordeal. Just go to Circuit city and get their Toyota spkr adapters. Then drill out the rivets holding the old spkrs to the door and remove.
Sounds like Jonathan has the answer. I'm in the process of doing the same thing... I just finished the driver's door. I'm upgrading with Boston Acoustics speakers. Several adaptor rings were included with the speakers so I was able to make it work. Another avenue: If there is a stereo installation place close by, swing in and see if they have any of these rings hanging around from previous installs. Note that many aftermarket speakers are recessed further inside the door than the OEM speakers. Before going too far on the installation, hook up the power window button and check that when the window goes all the way down, it doens't hit your new speaker. Good luck, -bob
