Consumer Reports says your '08 Prius will be $1500 cheaper to own over 5 years than an '08 Civic EX Auto, $750 cheaper than an EX MT. And thats for 12,000 miles per year assuming gas at $3.86. At the US average 15,000 miles per year at the current average fuel cost $4.08 you'd save as additional $915 over the Civic. If gas averages $5/gal over the next 5 years the Prius will be almost $3,300 cheaper than the Civic auto, or $2,500 cheaper than the MT.

So your friend is spending more money on a car that is smaller, no faster, has less gadgets, emits 2.3 tons per year more CO2, uses 60% more imported oil, emits more than 2.5 times more smog emissions, 7 times more VOCs, and is less cool looking

Main question is, "why do you care what he thinks?" I stopped buying cars to impress other people long time ago.....if you like it great, if not, maybe you bought the wrong car......

    enjoy the ride...........

You know I would tell him a story about how you had to go to the gas station to put gas in your Prius and pulled in behind a Civic, then said I had no idea that you were spending over $60 a week just to drive your Civic and then smugly say and I thought the $35 I spend was outrageous. Then say you know that adds up to an extra $100 a month now that I think about it.

I think you just provided yourself with a suggestion that beats any of the others.

I'm buying my Prius for ME...I don't have to impress anybody else and I certainly don't have to justify my purchase to some jerk. Let the jerk drive his own vehicle, find public transportation or hitch a ride with someone else. You deserve to be able to enjoy driving your Prius...even if you are just driving to work.

No need. I'll drive slow in the slow lane because it gets there faster. You can drive fast in your stop n go lane, while I relax in the slow n steady lane.

I'm not sure what AMERICAN car johnny was talking about. In the passed 20 years I've driven 2 Ford wagons into the ground but when I looked around this time for a new car , Ford had nothing for me, nor GM or Chrysler. It's as if they didn't want me as a customer. Our guys have nothing to compare with the Prius. Yet!

I like "Smile and ask him what's the payback period for his Civic."

Also...tell him you'll pay him the equivalent of the gas your Prius consumes and he can pay you the equivalent of the gas his Civic consumes.

You own a Prius. You don't *have* to carpool with anyone. If you do, get another partner. Drop him and let him get another carpooler. Hopefully one that drives a Hummer (with a gun rack that can hammer him about buying a foreign car).

If you have no choice (although I really can't see this as an option) start borrowing books on CD from the public library. Stifle all conversation.

HAHAHA. Now THAT'S funny. I've sat in the back of a civic, and let me tell you, it's a fitting punishment and a perfect revenge. LOL

I applaud your desire to carpool, even driving a Prius. Moving more than one person in it, even part of the time just increases the value of the FE you're getting. That's a good thing.

However, I think it's important to understand that carpools are optional arrangements. You no more "have" to say anything to this jerk than you "have" to carpool with him. He is also benefiting from this carpool arrangement and if he can't have the grace to respect your choice of vehicle, then the relationship can end and he can fend for himself. It is not your duty to convince him that you chose the right car.

It sounds like you've been patient and reasonable. If you've shared what you know and he's not listening, well, like I said, maybe driving himself for a few weeks will make him at least be more civil.

Civility is really all I'd expect out of him, there's no "win a toaster" contest for Prius converts. You just need him to act like a human being if he's going to ride in your car.

Lastly, now that you have a Prius, I'd ask myself how much I'm saving with this carpool arrangement. Maybe you'll find that this little "corrective action" won't be so costly to you...

    Good luck!

How about the extra thousands of pounds of CO2 you'd add to the air? The pollution you add to the water? The extra oil we import? The loss of national security? The money that leaves our economy? Is that worth it? Please don't be as stupid as your carpooler by thinking that this is only about the money.

Tell him that the prius requires less periodic maintenance and is probably the cleanest car on the the road. The prius retains its value better that any other car. The prius is more luxurious then yairs and civics. I bet that the those other cars don't have thermos for the antifreez and an exost that collects the harmful gass until the catholosit is warm then lets the into the atmoshere.

Or dont argue because you can never win with stupid people. When gas is five dollars or more you will be the one lauphing your head off at all the prius hatter living in the world today.

anybody. Who suggests a Yaris by comparison is dreaming. It's not a midsize car and nor nearly as well-appointed. It's not Just About The Mileage.

Besides: when gas hits $6, ask the jerk at work how he likes his Civic.

Great idea but not extreme enough!!!

Find someone who has a worn-out, GEO. I was going to suggest adding a hole to the muffler but that would be redundant. But for good measure, make sure the passenger seat can not be moved back.

Pickup the know-it-all and say, "You were right. I sold my Prius and got this great mileage car, used, and the payback is much, much faster than even your Civic. Heck, I have enough money to buy a couple of these GEOs and treat them like disposable cars."<GRINS>
