Dogs in the Prius

The Prius is even dog-friendly! Cool!

I have a request for you--is it inappropriate in this forum to ask you to post a photo of your dog? My wife and I are certifiable about dogs and cats, and we lost our Boston Terrier, Casey, in Nov. 2003. We still miss him, and enjoy seeing photos of other persons' dogs. TIA.

 

My cat also likes to go for a ride in my Prius. He either lays on the dash on top of the MFD or he lays on the tonneau cover in rear. While driving I think a lot of folks just assume I have a fat stuffed cat doll on my dash.

 

Sasha thinks the Prius is a bit small. She really has little choice but lie down. She can barely stand with the seat backs down. She prefers the Ford Explorer. She is not impressed by technology. See my atvar for her picture.

 

My cats aren't allowed in my Prius. It truly is my last cat hair free space.

(Just remembered) I have had a guinea pig and a yorkie in my car, however. They were both in crates at the time.

 

Now now, if you have cats, you have cat hair. If you have dogs, you have dog hair.

Twice a year, I have to take my vacuum apart to pull all the cat hair out of it. And I accepted a *long* time ago that my vehicle, my home, and my clothes would be covered in cat hair. Doesn't bother me one bit.

If I'm feeling Evil at work, I pluck some cat hair off my sweater and sprinkle it around the office. Ah yes, cat hair, the "gift" that keeps on giving!

 

(chuckle) I remember for a few weeks after we got our first cat (some 12 years ago), I was constantly brushing orange tabby fur off my clothes. I came to realize it was pointless to try to keep up with the shedding...besides, it was sort of a way for the cat to establish ownership: "MY human! MINE!"

 

The cat people are trying to hijack the dog thread!! :guns: None of your cats can out shed a Newf. And yes they drool and are proud of it. You have to be tolerant to be a Newf person!

 

I've got a labrador puppy coming in April. I am thinking that she'll like the back of the Prius, even though she may have to lay down. And you also have to be tolerant to be a lab person.

 

I'll take your Newf and raise you a Saint Bernard. I grew up with 2! One was named Brandy the other was Muffin. After some years my uncle got his own St. Bernard and named him Biscuit. I love big sweet dogs. Muffin used to kill bugs for me. She'd take her giant front paw and squash them.

 

Well I'm at the other end of the scale.. I have two Chihuahua's

"How smart?" you ask?

The first time my husband's ex-wife came to our house to pick up the kids, she (the ex) was standing in the kitchen waiting. The dog very calmly walked in, sized her up, and peed on her leg. It took every ounce of my being not to crack up on the spot.

Now you tell me that's not a smart dog.....

 

We had to take our golden retriever/german shepard mix dog to the vet last week. Kasey insisted on standing up so she could look over the seats to see where we were going. Unfortunately, we have speed bumps and she kept hitting her head on the roof. She seemed to be laughing with us about it.

 

OK I have a Newf story. When we were first married my wife worked evenings (3-11) as a Nurse and went to school during the day to get her BSN. I was a resident and was working >80 hours a week. She was sleeping after I left early. At that time we had an electric blanket and a Newf named Fred (BarbaraAllens Uruses Major) woke her early in the morning ( I was typically at the hospital by 5:45 am) by Fred barking. He grabbed her night gown sleeve and dragged her out of bed. The electric blanket on my side had shorted out and was smoking. Moments later it burst into flames. True story.

A close friend of mine had a golden retriever as a service dog. For the last few months of her life, she wasn't her obedient self. We had minor problems with her at a concert in DisneyWorld, but that was a stressful environment for a dog. Next day, all she did was rest. At first, I understood, since we were exhausted too, but then thought the dog should bounce back better than that.

Soon later she died and it was discovered she had hidden liver cancer. The vet didn't even figure on that until the necropsy. What then seemed to be laziness was now heroic. Despite loss of energy and probable pain due to being sick, she still served as best as she could without really showing she was sick. If only they could talk and tell us these things. But then, even if she could tell us, she probably would not have so that she could still serve.

And thank you for the Newf stories--I love that breed. Well, actually, there are very few dogs I don't love--probably just the odd one who tries to bite me, and even then I figure there's probably a very good reason why...yes, I'm a sap when it comes to animals! I've been known to cross a street to ask someone walking a dog, "Excuse me, may I pet your dog?" (I don't usually bother service dogs though, as I know they're working). 9 times out of 10, I'm not even halfway through my request when the dog is standing on my feet, wagging his/her tail and looking up at me: "Well, aren't you going to fuss over me?"

I know...I'm so far OT that I'll need a GPS to get back! Sorry!

FYI, I got this great hammock seat cover for my back seat from Drs. Foster and Smith. It hangs on the back of the front head rests and from the front of the back seat head rests. It has a thick faux fleece bottom and my dog just loves it. It doesn't acutally hang like a hammock would suggest, it does rest on the seat. It keeps the dog hair contained, my dog lays down cause he thinks it is his bed and I can even flatten it out on the seats when I take them down for longer trips. It also keeps him from jumping into the front seat. It was the best accessory I got for my Prius.

I am posting the picture from the catalog. That isn't my dog or my car, but it could be!
