I am considering the purchase of an after market GPS for my 2008 Prius. I read some complaints on some GPS sites that on the 2008 Camry and 2008 Highlander the GPS units were not able to receive a satalite signal adequately. Has anyone heard of such a problem on the Prius??
No, I use the sandbag mount from Garmin for my Nuvi and it works like a charm. There is such a big dash and sloping windshield on the Pruis that I get great reception.
I use the Bradketron UFM-100BL Friction Dash Pad ($11.38 at Amazon) with my Nuvi. Great reception in the Prius, plus sitting atop the MFD, it can slide forward a little and is a great sun-shade for the MFD.
My TomTom ONE XL mounted right beside the MFD had 12 satellites at full or near full signal strength on my trip to Townsville and back. I love my TomTom nearly as much as I love my Prius.
it really depends on where you live/travel. For example, in downtown LA with high rise buildings (we call those urban canyons), any GPS receiver will probably fail at some point. However, driving in an empty open street, u should be fine with any GPS receiver. Remember, the more sky it can see, the more satellite it can see, then you get better accuracy. Most of them comes with SIRFIII chips. Which essentially its just a chip that amplifies weak GPS signal that allow you get GPS reception even if the device was sitting in the glove compartment or in my case, inside a concrete lab... Other than that, all GPS HARDWARE is all the same, it's usually the software that differes between each GPS navigation units.
