Not sure there is anywhere for this particular post. As I was entering the mileage data for my car tonight, I passed the "compared to prior car" mark of $5,000 in gas savings (2,042 gallons, ~67,700 miles) mid May. I'm sure it actually happened earlier since I am using generic "Summer 22 MPG, Winter 20 MPG" values for the old car and I know I'm being generous. If I had not purchased the Prius, other cars I might have chosen would have cost about the same as the Prius and would have gotten about the same mileage as the prior car. That makes the Prius $5,000 cheaper than anything I would be driving. Plus I have extra features such as Smart Key, Nav, etc.
Congrats! Im saving about $500 a month in gas alone just for my car and the wife saves about 300. Going from suvs to Prii is saving us a boatload of gas we didnt have to buy!
Driving 30k miles a year and $4/gal for gas right now, my yearly savings will be $4800. That literally almost has the Prius paying for itself! My previous vehicle was a Jeep at 16mpg and I'm basing my savings on 45mpg on the Prius. Even if gas was at $3/gal, I'd still be saving $3k a year.
When I bought my Prius in April 07, I didn't think I would save $4,000 in 1 year. Just imagine what gas prices will be if a hurricane goes thru the Gulf of Mexico this hurricane season!
I hate to think about that. As much as I like saving more and more in my Prius, I do enjoy Jetskiing in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter and both of those are getting more expensive. In addition, I heat with oil, so I wouldn't mind seeing prices come down a bit..
I have saved about $1440 over the last 12 months on fuel in my Prius over the 2 litre Camry it replaces. However the Camry was paid for but had 290,000km on it so was due to be replaced. My payments have been $4368 over the 12 months so overall the newer car has cost under $3000 this year with no depreciation. According to my insurance renewal the market value is the same now as it was last year, how good is that?
