Can the recall/update be done without clearing out all the "My Places" and marked locations?

I ask because I had the update done and all my info is still there. I am wondering if they actually did anything at all.

:) The NAV DVD update replaced the DVD disc only. Your "routes" and "memory points" are stored in memory in your Prius computer. The DVD is "read only" thus none of the things you had programmed will have been disturbed.

When you enable the MAP and press MENU, touch the "Map DVD" button on the upper right portion of the display which will show the DVD Version. The newest now available is 4.2.

Once the new DVD is installed, you will need to be sure your Search Area is set to your part of the country. On the Destination screen, check the "Search Area" highlight. If it is NOT your area, press "Change" and select your area.

Just to be sure, I said "home" and he did not route me to Toyota City, Japan. :)

2004 Prius with package #9 purchased November 2003.

About a month ago, I had the Nav "update" installed. I was not satisfied.
The original software had my neighborhood mapped...the "update" did not and voice directions to my home were no longer available.

I asked that the original software be reinstalled.

The service advisor and the tech who installed the update told me that it might be difficult to get another disk from Toyota. Anyway, I insisted and last week the disk "became available" and the previous software was installed. My sub-division is now mapped!

This time I checked the version number of the program...it is now 3.1. The "update" was 4.2 (I think).

    My questions...

    1. Was the original version of the software when I bought the car 3.1?
    2. Will a better update be forthcoming?
    3. Will Toyota consider my "reinstall" an update and feel no reason to
    install any forthcoming "updates"?

Thanks to anyone with information. If you wish...can email me at [email protected].

This is a great site and I have learned a lot about my car...the most "fun-to-drive" car I have ever owned.

From what I've been able to glean, based upon posts by members on the board, if your Prius was delivered in November of 2003, 3.1 should have been your original version.

Re the 4.2 update, it appears as if this is pretty much hit or miss. I went from 3.2 to 4.2 and my update hasn't been the least bit problematic.

I have no clue, of course, what Toyota has planned but I'd be willing to bet that, since you've already had the NAV update installed, future updates will not be free of charge.

OK...thanks for the quick response to my post.

Service manager at the dealer told me that this "should not" be counted as an update. However, those guys change jobs every other month.

I will be contacting Toyota directly about this.

    Thanks again.

    Interesting.....

I have the Version 3.1 DVD which was removed when 4.2 was "updated" several weeks back. It was left on my passenger seat in a plastic case when my Prius was returned to me. From what I read, it seems Dealers are supposed to either keep or destroy the old DVD when updating. I have noted only minor changes in the Ver. 4.2 DVD. (I'm in Texas - Area 5)

I have noticed several Version 3.1's on eBay which sold for ~$70.

    My 2¢ worth....

How difficult is it to replace the Nav DVD disk?

When the tech at the dealer replaced mine (3.1) and I squawked about
how bad the version 4.2...I was told about the difficulty to change it and the noting of my VIN. I took it as the usual dealership "male bovine fecal material" one gets at a dealership when they don't want to do something.

Anyway...I am back with version 3.1 and would update if a better version is released.

Before I had the update done, I made a backup of my previous version, 3.2. I found replacing the DVD was only marginally more difficult than popping a CD or DVD into my PC and, even then, only because of the location (under the driver's seat).

The version that I had on my 05 delivered Sept. 29 was 4.1. It worked really well for me but 4.2 as if my NAV had developed Alzhiemers and couldn't find its way home. Had no trouble getting the 4.1 reinstalled - only one day had elapsed, it was that bad! All my memorized places remained intact.

I've called Toyota twice to get The Letter to take to my dealer, and what arrived today?

A "sample" letter, without anything specific to me like a VIN number. Not even my name. Lucky the envelope was addressed right.

    Really poor..

VIN isn't an issue. Any NAV DVD version <4.2 for '04/'05 qualifies for replacement.

    I am just wondering....
Since I've heard mixed reviews about the new 4.2 update, I am hesistant to get it. Will they offer a newer update between now and December 31st, 2005 or will I get a 4.2 disk no matter when I go in for the update?

Can't be answered until someone with a new '05 has a version higher than 4.2, giving a little time for the new version to possibly reach service distribution.

I think I am going to wait until Dec. '05 to get this installed (that's how long Toyota's given us). By then we may have a "5.0" version with 3D mapping (lol).

    One can only dream.

I have a 2005 Prius I picked up on 30 Dec 2004. It has NAv Ver 4.2 I complained about the poor routing capabilities to Toyota and the Dealer. Toyota said I had to go to the dealer and have it checked since the update is VIN specific they have to prove there is something wrong with my NAV system. All I got at the dealer service center was maybe that was how it was supposed to work. No one there even had any idea how the NAV system worked. I don't think starting the routing highlight and instructions some 10 blocks from my present location is how it is supposed to work. They are supposed to be contacting Toyota Tech Support. That was a week ago and I haven't heard from them since. I would really like to try a one of the 3.0 versions. Anyone get any new info on this subject PLS post...

I have posted here before on this subject. I had "updated" version 4.2 (or was it 4.1) installed also and discovered that it did not map my neighborhood as the original software (3.1) did.

I squawked (rather loudly) to my "service advisor" who ran for the tech who installed the "update". The tech gave me some minor crap about VIN number, but said he would contact Toyota.

A little over a week later, I called the "service advisor" who said that he had "just received" a disk from Toyota. Next day I had it installed...turns out to be version 3.1, but it does map my neighborhood.

I asked my "service advisor" if this counted as an update. He replied that Toyota is very liberal about these things and wants to keep the customer happy and that if there is another update...I will likely have no problem getting it.

Time will tell what happens. "Service Advisors" come and go (this is my 3rd in 1 year), but Toyota will still be there and hopefully still as liberal as they are now.

When I called Toyota about my 2005 ver 4.2 Nav they said the update is VIN specific and mine was not listed

Unless your car is a very early production '05, it already came with version 4.2 installed.
