If true, would this explain the recent drop in Prius sales, i.e. slow down in Gen II supply?

I hope they do.....it would coincide when I get my bonus check and permission to finally get my Prius.....it's killing me (figuratively) that I've had to wait this long to afford/get buy off to get the car.

The fuel economy shown (40km/liter) would be based on Japanese test standards which yield significantly higher numbers than US numbers. My recollection is that the current Prius is rated at around 75 mpg using the Japanese numbers. Still that is a very significant increase.

If there's a list, I'll get on it...Just what does getting on a list buy me though? Is it contractual...or what?

the 1st run of new cars usually have problems (some minor some major), since i already have a prius now, i will wait for the 2nd or even the 3rd run of production, to ensure a more problem free vehicle

So does that mean that the 2009 my be the new updated one or the 2010 will be the updated model released in April 2009?

It actually means nothing. It's a news story. Wait till next year to find out. It will either be released in April (as a 2010 model) or in October as a 2010 model. I'm guessing October. Right now they are getting ready to make the 2009 model (probably the final cars of the current design). Some are supposed to have double battery packs with plug-in capability, for fleet owners. I'm guessing those will have no spare tire, but we'll see soon.

When I picked up my 2008 just a couple of weeks ago, the salesperson got a phone call and someone was asking about the next gen. My salesperson said 80 - 90 MPG and that it would not be out until mid 2009. He also added that it was all "unofficial".

The windshield will not have those side extensions. It will probably look far more like the current model just a little bigger and smoother.

If it does come out in April 09, it will of course be a 2010 model year car.

The previous date I understood was that the 'line off' date was April 2009. I take that to mean first vehicle off the line, then they have to be stored to accumulate enough volume to ship, then shipped to the WC and the EC then distributed to the local outlets. Realistically I'd say August here is an early 'estimate'.

OK you heard it first and last here. There will be NO 80-90 mpg Prius in CY 2009 / MY 2010. Spreading these kind of false hopes is what makes it so hard for the general public to believe anything that's true about the Prius. "I heard that it was supposed to get [ fill in the blank with an outrageous number ] mpg in fuel economy. Why on debut does it only get 65C and 58 H? How disappointing." ( How dumb is it to believe that fuel economy would double in one generation? )

Better to promise less and deliver more.

Now when a PHEV model debuts several years later it might get the 80-90 range using the gas-free segment as a fuel economy boost.
