We just got our brand new 2008 Prius home today. My son opened the hatchback and I was not paying attention. I backed into the garage with it open. Needless to say the garage won this battle. It cracked the spoiler and the light will not stay in anymore. We are trying to decide whether to call the insurance company, try to order the part and fix it ourselves. The other option is to get it to where the light will stay up on the spoiler, any advice about how to do that would be wonderful. We are looking for advice, suggestions and such. We love this site and have been reading everything people have posted. We love the new car and were almost in tears when this happened. I guess we just chalk it up to a really stupid mistake. Thanks for everyones help.
Sorry to hear of this. I feel for you all. For the 2nd option, I would use clear caulking glue underneath and along the sides of the light, and until it dries use painters tape to keep the light in place. I'd call around to various Toyota dealerships, look online for other sources to find out the price of a new spoiler. Perhaps the light doesn't need replacement. Telling my insurance company would be my last option. ZC1
Great advice. How hard do you think replacing the spoiler would be? The light appears OK, but not completely sure what it should look like when not in the spoiler.
Really sorry about your accident. I don't know if you need a whole new spoiler, but a new one retails for $315, and can be bought at discount for $240. I also don't know if the new spoiler comes painted or not (I suspect it's unpainted). Patrick Wong found this Toyota OEM Parts place whose prices seem pretty good: Champion ToyotaWorld Anyways, it gives you an idea of the cost in the event you want to fix it at the dealer or a body shop. And you can fool around with it to try to determine exactly which parts you need. Good luck.
