I love this idea... bring it to California and I'll be a happy camper. Can we also report people who don't have their children properly secured in the car? I can't tell you how many people I see with kids either crawling all over the back seat or sitting on the front seat passenger's lap. How about people reading while driving, or putting on makeup? Last year I was driving next to somebody who was holding a phone with his left hand and an ice cream with his right. I don't want to know what appendage he was using to steer.
I've thought about using the camcorder capture bad drivers and license plates. I figure that I would anonomously sent them to the police and they can act on them as they see fit. Then it occured to me that my use of the camcorder would probably affect my own driving skills. Maybe as a passenger. . .
I am surprised auto insurance companies haven’t banded together and come out with a program like this. They are the ones who could really put a hurt on most aggressive/reckless/bad drivers. The persons making the reports would have to give their names to prevent false reports against an individual. The insurance companies could also "weigh" the reports by the reporting individual's own driving record. I find it amusing the USA Today article starts off with: “Ever been cut off by a Hummer . . .†Ummmm, why yes I have! Apparently the speed limit was too slow for him, so he passed three of us (I was the middle car) by going overland on the shoulder and kicking up rocks everywhere! :cussing: :guns: :x
While in theory it sounds like a good idea, it's reminiscent of the "snitch on your neighbor" tactics used by repressive regimes. Although, on the other hand, if they're doing something illegal, why not??
I think I'll go out into the parking lot and start writing down license plates of cars I don't like. [I'm kidding, people]
There's always the potential for abuse, obviously. One method to curb that would be to flag multiple reports within the same date and time frame.
Our roads in this country have become the death camps. Until we come to grips with road rage and bad driving we will continue to slaughter innocent people who are just doing the daily commute or pleasure driving.
