Hello everyone, I was driving home the other day and started to notice something really interesting. I started to pass up one SUV after another. These were the same SUVs that were carelessly propelled to blazing speeds without any consideration for others or the environment. Now they are all trying to hypermile their way to 16 MPGS. HAHAHAHA. I just couldn't help myself from cutting them off and show them my license plate holder that reads "Your Car Sucks Gas". Has anyone else noticed themselves passing up more cars than usual.
Yes, I have noticed the same thing,, unfortunately, with a regular ICE they cannot hypermile. But I have noticed many of them trying to drive slower..
Not as many, but still a bunch of large pickups in North Texas blasting by me like gas was still $1.50...either it's their company's truck or they won't get it until the repo man tows it away.
Visited Las Vegas and Mesquite, NV over the Memorial Day weekend. Lots of traffic on I-15, the speed limit in rural areas is 75 mph. I would say that the average speed was around 80 mph to the extent that the traffic flow permitted that. Stayed at Luxor in Las Vegas, totally booked up, Las Vegas Blvd full of cars during the day, no economic recession evident over the weekend.
Re: Revenge Of The Prius Perhaps at 5.00 A Gallon I drive the speed limit. The SUV's are still passing at about 10 miles over the limit and still riding my tail. I guess gas has to go to 5.00 a gallon here before they slow down. I am getting more people asking me about the car, how I like it etc. :horn:
Actually.. more and more people are asking me about the Prius.. And we've had it for over two years now. Higher gas prices, in my mind, are a good thing!
It's kinda sad. For some of those people, a big fancy truck was the one luxury they ever aspired to that was within their reach.
What I've noticed is a small percentage of the cars on the highway are driving slower. I tend to drive a few miles per hour under the speed limit and stay in the slow lane (hence normal 50+mpg on most tanks). I still see drivers, who must have unlimited funds, blasting past me in their gas guzzlers. My guess is 5% of the drivers have shifted from heavy foot to light foot. As prices go up and people see the impact on their monthly budget they will no doubt begin to change their driving habits. I think some people even get behind me, somehow thinking that if they follow a Prius their mileage will improve.
Re: Revenge Of The Prius Perhaps at 5.00 A Gallon Have to side with my Homie on this issue. I've traveled up and down I 84 over the weekend, had the cruise control set to either 55 or 65 depending on where I was. I felt like I was sitting still, everyone was passing me. The SUV's and Mini Vans continue to travel much faster then the posted limits. One had on lady ask about the Prius recently. My neighbor asks almost every day, "What you getting for gas mileage today?"
you guys are lucky, around here, i get SUVs up the butt all day long. their favorite thing to do is to cut me off, floor it towards a red light, and then slam on their brakes
Sure they can, if they want to make an effort to learn how. Most of the techniques used to improve MPG in a Prius work in other vehicles as well. Of course any technique that involves putting the vehicle into Neutral and turning the engine off is probably a bad idea, but there are enough legal techniques for most vehicles to significantly beat their EPA MPG numbers.
oh my gosh!! I freakin' HATE SUV drivers around here now. They all drive like blind old asian grandparents (no offence if you are). Trying to hyper-mile their Yukons and Escilades going 30 in a 45, taking corners like there is lava on both sides of the road, its insane! I'm like, lets GOOOOO!!!! Its not my fault you're narrow minded and made a stupid decision 2 years ago without thinking ahead, and about the future, like I did.
If i'm in a hurry to get somewhere i'll step it up to 75 and one day i passed one of my coworkers and he asked me why he always sees stupid Prius' speeding on the freeway. My answer....because when YOU do 75, ur mileage goes to 15 in your Jeep Cherokee 5.7, but when i do 75 my mileage drops to 41...."ouch"
Most everyone around here (Central California) still drive to fast but there are a few SUV/Truck drivers that think they are saving gas by sloooowly accelerating up to the speed limit. This drives me nuts because if I’m behind them my MPG suffers, is that “Revenge of the prius†also? Wildkow
That must be on page 1 of the SUV / monster pick-up owners manual. Or, maybe it was flashed as subliminal seduction in "Dumb & Dumber"
Gee, I don't see any SUVs or trucks doing anything resembling hypermiling or slowing down. Despite having the worst fuel economy on the road, they seem to go the fastest. I almost never have regular cars riding my bumper as I do the speed limit, yet I have large trucks and SUVs doing this on a near constant basis. I think part of this is that if you drive a large truck or SUV in the Bay Area, you aren't quite right. These people are probably conservatives who hate San Francisco and see my poor Prius as representing everything they hate about "San Francisco values." It saddens me because I'm pretty sure one of these douchebags is going to rearend me sooner or later.
I took US1 to US130 from NY to get home late Sunday afternoon. Overall I thought traffic was light as there were few cars in sight. I think everyone else was at the beach.
