Any Prius owners 65 or older?

I am over 64 and bought my Prius over 4 years ago. I bought it for Diamond lane sticker, mileage, comfort and just plain love it. My husband keeps wanting to drive it instead of his Audi.

FYI: The main battery failed at 97,000 miles and was replaced by Toyota at no charge because of warranty.

 

I'm a 25 year old aerospace engineer. I wouldn't say that I necessarily expect the technology, but I do wonder why the Prius is the only car on the market to use it to such great effect.

I consider the CVT and the powertrain as a whole to be a great feat of engineering, but I don't see it as something that's so complicated that other companies should be incapable of replicating it.

 

Had to blow the dust off of this thread but hey, a lot of us have collected some dust over the years. I'm just a kid to some. (will be 65 in Jan) I fell in love with the Prius 4 years ago and finally got my dream car in April of this year. (Just before they went missing from the dealers lots.) After 30 years with IBM this tech stuff is my toys of choice.

I'm 70......... Needed a replacement, car 2 nd with hatchback. Looked at Honda Fit (nice car, bumpy ride-good gas milage)

I decided why not buy something that gets super great mileage???

The Prius is a Technological wonderful fun to drive car. Our Lexus sits in the garage.

I also have a Jet Ski and a Electric Golf Cart.

And ....I don't fuss with the Prius.Just Push the button and go......Great car, handles like a golf cart.

And the enviroment thing.......In 10 years we will be saying...I guess we were pretty stupid, being lead around by idiots.

I will be 65 in September and wife 62 next month. The great gas mileage was the number one reason for making the plunge.

 

I am 75, bought it for FE and environmental issues....I have zero complaints. Except the crummy dealers. They are all the same...lying bastards. Especially Cramer Toyota of Venice, FL

I will be 72 soon with a younger wife of 65. The Prius was mine & now it is her's. Mine is a Highlander Limited Hybrid, a fine car but not a sipper like the Prius.

 

I'm 72. I bought a 2004 four years ago. It's most enjoyable car I've ever owned including my 1954 Super 88 Oldsmobile and a 1984 Fleetwood and I bought it before gas went up. I change the oil and filters myself. I bought a hydraulic jack and now change the snow tires twice a year. I love the navigation, the Bluetooth and my X-M Roady II which Velcro's to the dash.
My wish list includes an electric turbo (after market would be OK) to get up the long mountain passes on I-70 and an electric motor in each real wheel (like the Hybid Highlander) for 4WD when it snows heavily. The auto parallel park would be fun to have. That's it for me.

 

My father is 88. He bought a Prius last December because he's always loved the idea of an electric car. For him this car is magic. He has waited his whole life for it to become a reality. I think in some ways it’s what I would feel like if Star Trek transporters were to become real for me.

When he was a young boy growing up on a ranch in West Texas, his family would hitch up a wagon and go to town once or twice a year to buy supplies. Yes, just like the old western movies. He left school in ninth grade to help with the ranch full time. The first car he owned was a Model T.

He didn't marry until later in life, and so spent his money on cars, always driving the newest, latest, greatest thing. A wife and four children kept him busy and away from the pretty new cars. He drove his family with pride in station wagons, and we took many trips around the western United States in the summers with my brother and me facing backwards. Yes, again, just like in the movies. He was a Ford man still.

As his children grew up and money again became available for new cars, he began again to play with the latest and greatest. By this time he had turned into a Dodge man and loved his Cummins diesels for towing his 5th wheels around. He loved talking to people in the campgrounds, and they would sit around and talk about their kids, pets and rigs. Talk would often turn to new advances in car technology. He took lots of ribbing from his campfire friends when he told them electric cars were coming soon and many people would be driving them.

I still don’t know how he heard about the Prius, but one day last August he said he wanted to go and see one. We went to the Toyota dealer and a salesman sat my father in one and he drove us around explaining how things worked. I wasn’t paying much attention sitting quietly in the back watching the scenery go by. At the end of the ride, my father said he wanted one. Holy Smoke, why hadn’t I paid attention? I didn’t know anything about them, hadn’t driven it, and hadn’t even thought about buying a new car.

Shortly afterwards his health took a turn for the worse and we stopped talking about cars and started talking about heart attacks and aortic aneurysms. In November he told me to talk to my friend at Toyota and get us a car to drive for a few days. I thought it somewhat of a miracle, both that he had grown strong enough to bring up his electric car, and that there was one available they would let us take. We made sure his wheelchair would fit in the back and that he could get in an out of it mostly on his own. When we took the loaner back, we placed an order and seven days later, I drove my father off the lot in what will be his last new car.

Daddy lives for his afternoon trips around town and loves to tell people about his car while he sits in it waiting for me to run an errand inside a store. His window is rolled down, his dog is on his lap to encourage people stop by and pet the dog, and he brags how many miles per gallon we get. He gets his facts mixed up a little, and we don’t quite get “100 miles a gallonâ€, but he loves his car and loves me and continues to baffle the doctors with his continued good health. Like my father, I have come to believe a Prius is a magic car.

 

Seedge, wonderful story. Maybe electromagnetic waves are beneficial, after all.

I'm 73 and bought my 2005 Prius just after my 70th birthday. Nice birthday present, huh? Anyway, just because only 5 over-65s responded to the survey, don't draw any conclusions. Around here in South Florida the majority of the Prius owners are over 65 (so are a majority of residents <g>). I still get about 50 mpg overall and my wife (lead foot) averages about 45 mpg.

I'm wondering why the EPA ratings on the newer models has dropped from 60 (for my 2005 model) to 48 for the latest models?

Anyway, I bought my Prius because of the technology (I'm a retired Electrical Engineer.)

Today is my baby's first month's birthday and I must say it has been a wonderful choice. We traded an '05 Sienna XLT Ltd and have never regretted it. I totally love the technology and continue to study it, always finding something new to learn, especially from this site.
We have an '08 Base Super white, grey interior with an #5 pkg. We added aftermarket leather with heated seats. I've added some decals, will add splash guards, W T deflectors, side moldings, which I already have and it will be my "new age" sport car.
We were lucky, the car had been ordered, the buyer walked away and I was in the right place at the right time. I think it was the last packed '08 in the Cincinnati area because they walked.
I bought it at Kings Toyota and they were very, very fair in all aspects of the deal.
BTW, I'm almost 72 and my wife is 70.
