Please Post Your Stereo Upgrades

From the back of the basic non-jbl Toyota head unit, I cut the factory speaker wires (both front and rear) and ran them into the front and rear inputs of the LC6i. This way I've balance control using the factory head unit.

From here (obviously) I send the signals out the RCAs (front and rear) to my 4-channel amp, located in the nice compartment above the spare, but hidden below the cargo floor. Like it was made to install stereo equipment! OR a plug-in lithium battery...someday.

The LC6i then has some sort of "sum" or "rear channel" sub-out that takes the rear signals and sends them out a separate set of RCAs to my sub amps.

sorry if I'm not explaining it well. It's been installed and running so well, I forgot exactly how I got my stereo to this point, LOL!

 

I have mildly upgraded my JBL.

The iPod is now stuffed in the center console and controlled with a remote control. I never have to take it out.

 

I tapped into the rear speaker signals, I traced the wires back from the door speakers and spliced in behind the panels where the front seatbelts are. I'll take the panel off and snap a few pics if you want.

 

Planning on doing this next weekend so if you can snap a pic, I'd be most appreciative. It'd save me the same tracing you did. Thanks

 

I didn't see it in this thread, so I thought it was worth posting again based on the number of posts wishing for a custom fiberglass sub enclosure how-to. A nice write up...and it includes pictures & how-to's for satellite radio and amp installation as well.

 

You probably will want to trace anyway in case the color of your wires vary, But this will still give you an idea of where I split in. On the blue connector I have the lead coming from the radio on one side and on the other side I have it going to both my speaker level converter and the rear speakers in the door. I decided not to use the amp to do the speakers at least not yet. By the way this is the Right side between the door underneath the panel where the seat belt is.

 

Nice work. I am surprised the aftermarket hasn't jumped at the chance to manufacture a sub like this.

 

I have a 2008 Prius w/NAV. I am looking to install a device in the empty DIN hole under the factory radio. Does anyone have photos of how to disassemble the dash to get to it. I figured out how to get the passenger vent out but it seems like you have to keep getting out the parts on the left to get to the radio so I can remove that little piece that has the soft door cover that conceals the DIN area.

Also, I need to get a blank plate to cover that DIN area so I can install my device there, any ideas on where to get a blank plate for that DIN hole?

Wow.

I just got my Prius and about to do something similar. But man does that JL stick out, huh? That's a 10 inch? Hmmmmmm......... makes me think about doing it some other way, but where would I put that thing? I was going to get a JL 10" too, as I used to have 12" in my other car.

 

Yeah, it sticks out. You should have seen it when I had a two sub enclosure. Wait, I have a picutre.

I got the Alpine PXE-650 back from Alpine/California very fast. They repaired a short circuit in the "signal processing section". I reinstalled and it's working well so far.

Note: There were no problems bypassing the Alpine processor and running the stock JBL amp straight to the new speakers (also bypassing the JL Audio amplifier and crossovers). It ran like that for a couple of weeks. It sounded very good compared to total stock and plenty loud (given all the sound proofing and better speakers), but maybe not as effortlessly detailed and certainly not as well EQ'd and it lacked the incredible soundstage created with the Imprint technology on the Alpine.

Update on zr-650s: These babies sure have changed. They go sooo low now, and move sooo much air, that my highly deadened front doors have developed a vibration at certain low frequencies. I have fixed one door by adding some bracing to the largest hole in the door and more deadening material. Still have to do the other. Of course another solution would be to install a woofer to take over the lowest frequencies.
