electrolysis, HHO intake charge

    I don't see any potential problems with that plan. Let us know how it works for you. Maybe you should try mixing in some other ingredients to see if that improves the mileage over straight nitric acid. :behindsofa:

    I'm an Aggie. And I can tell you from experience that it is possible to get arrested for riding a bicycle while intoxicated. No, not me, it was one of my roommates.

    Oh yeah, I'm fully aware that it is illegal to BWI (bike while intoxicated), but it is a better option than DWI.

    For my money, I don't think a flux capacitor will take you nearly far enough, since you're still stuck in this dimension. That's why I've got an oscillation overthruster installed in my Prius.

    Hate to tell you this, but it's installed backwards. It causes you to travel backwards in time while in motion, thus arriving at your destination before you made the decision to leave. I imagine this has caused you great confusion as you've no idea how you got to where you are at, as you haven't left yet.

    Thanks for the help! I definitely was getting confused a lot. Each time it happened I tried to contact the place where I got it, but I kept getting weird responses, like the place didn't exist yet or something. It all makes sense now! I'll flip the thing around in the morning.

    Whoops, that is a common mistake if you forget to set the appropriate time reference on the trip computer. Don't forget to take into account the precession of the equinoxes, probably best to deal with sidereal time

    RE: the local news report, I think we're going to be seeing more of these stories of how "jus' folks" came up with a genius way to make energy out of just water. CNN ran an iReport (viewer-submitted video) a few days ago allegedly showing a small motor running on just water and a "cheap chemical".

    Merely going 430 miles on 7 gallons doesn't cut it.

    People make all sorts of unreasonable claims. Often they believe these claims with all of the fervor of the truly devout, even when solid scientific evidence proves otherwise.

    Trying something isn't the same as proving it scientifically. This is one area where I refuse to accept anecdotal evidence. The scientific evidence is condemning, and the opportunity for the placebo effect is too pronounced.

    Hey would you mind taking a picture of your engine bay with the HHO set up?
    I have been doing research and want to try this out but the engine bay is pretty tight - no room for too much extra stuff.
    I wanted to see how you made it work.

    Cool--an HHO thread!!

    I don't have one on the Prius (I made myself promise I wouldn't change anything on it) but I do have one on the '85 4Runner.

    I used the Smack plans and built it myself. It's the one with the 4" PVC enclosure and the stainless steel wall plates. I mix the NaOH electrolyte so that the chamber draws about 15 amps when warm.

    I don't drive it enough to measure MPG but one thing it really seems to do well is clean up the emissions. I wish I had some emissions test numbers to compare, but I can sure tell the difference with my nose.

    Without the HHO going in, this truck smells just raunchy. My parents won't drive behind me because it makes them sick. I also notice that it never gets tailgated (a plus, I suppose). With the HHO, the exhaust smell practically disappears. The engine also runs more quietly with the HHO, probably due to the more complete burn.

    I also use an EFIE circuit between the oxygen sensor and the computer to trick the computer into a leaner mixture. Without the EFIE, I noticed I was using more fuel with the HHO because the computer was sensing the leaner exhaust condition and adding more fuel. I did notice a nice boost of power in this configuration. With the EFIE installed, fuel consumption goes back down but it still seems to have a bit more power than stock.

    I think it can possibly improve MPG, since the hydroxy gas is acting somewhat like a burn catalyst. Catalysts are pretty magical things, scientifically--speeding up reactions without being consumed. The HHO is consumed so it's not a true catalyst, but I think it works along the same lines. Anything that can improve the abysmal energy conversion efficiency of an ICE can certainly improve MPG, even after the additional electrical current draw.

    I can see why it wouldn't be a good OEM addition though. The chambers require pretty frequent electrolyte replenishing and unless you have a special, low-temp electrolyte blend (which can make a messy coating on the plates), you have to bring the chamber inside to keep it from freezing. It's not the kind of thing most motorists would want to mess with.

    It also adds some danger. Although there shouldn't be enough HHO at any one time to be too big a problem, I had the chamber ignite a few years ago due to a loose connection under the cap. It sounded like a gunshot and fractured the PVC cap but didn't do any serious harm. Even the rest of the chamber was intact. There are some safety precautions that should be on every system, such as the use of a relay, a fused 12v input and the use of a bubbler between the chamber and intake to stop any possible backfires from reaching the chamber. The relay should also be activated from a circuit that is only live when the engine is running. If the chamber is on and the engine is not (a definite concern with the Prius), enough hydroxy gas can accumulate in the intake to be truly dangerous.

    I think it's a great project though, and I think it's very well worth it from the emissions standpoint. I wouldn't do it on the Prius (it already has nice low emissions and I don't want to mess with it :eek:) but I highly recommend it for an old project car.

    Bob Boyce has an installation in a 1st-gen Pri. It has a large, custom electrolysis chamber mounted in the trunk. It delivered pretty nice MPG for a Prius 1.



    Here's my Smack booster and '85 Toyota 4wd with the 22R-E 4-cylinder installation:

    The 12v relay is just above and to the left of the chamber in the photo. The small red wire comes from the ignition circuit and is wired through a dash switch (and fused). The bubbler tube is running down the right side of the chamber. It uses windshield washer fluid so it doesn't freeze. The outlet of the bubbler feeds into the intake between the air filter box and throttle body.
