Does anyone know what the heat-shrink-covered part in the EV Kit is? Somewhere I thought I saw someone describe it as a "momentum switch."
I'm pretty sure it's some sort of timer. The other EV switches operate instantly (assuming conditions are right), but the Coastal one activates after being held for over 2 seconds. This way the lever can still be used to cancel the Cruise Control.
OK, that would mean it is probably a capacitor or a cap and resistor time delay circuit. It can't be too valuable since the price of the kit is so minimal. Thanks for your input. By the way, tell me about your NAV enhancement kit (offline if you prefer).
The "NAV Enhancement Kit" is the name for their original Lockpick. It only works on a 2004 or 2005 using the 4.2 version of the DVD (or a hybrid using newer data and the original startup files). There's a method of giving full access to the NAV system while the car is in motion by tapping certain areas of the MFD. The kit did the same thing when you pressed "DEST" I've heard mention of a relay with Coastal's EV kit, but I don't know exactly what's under the shrink wrap, but it's gotta be the timer circuit.
After closer examination (I installed about 2 hours ago), it is obvious that is a 555 or 556 timer on a teeny circuit board, so the mystery is solved. I didn't tear off the heat shrink to see, but it isn't worth the bother anyway, it is definitely a solid state active timer circuit. Thanks for the detail on the Nav enhancement. And since it doesn't really get a good power feed, there's significant evidence that it's not particularly reliable. . Wire a straight button, you'll be happier. . _H*
Coastal sells a Lockpick for the later models at NAV LOCKPICK Another way is to cut the speed sensor wire and install a switch. You can see more of that at Prius Speed Wire
I've really hijacked my own thread, but since it is off on a tangent already, tell me this: I looked at the NAV LOCKPICK ad and they say it is plug and play. Does that mean that you simply plug a module into the OBD II connector under the steering wheel? Or is it more complex than that? The price isn't cheap, but if it is a piece of cake, I might go for the top of the line LOCKPICK. TIA, Tom
On the 2005 you unplugged two cable in the NAV system under the driver's seat; plugged the gizmo into the NAV system and plugged the cables you just unplugged into the gizmo. On a 2006+ I have no idea.
