My parents have a very old Stanley garage door opener, and I also had success using the "press and release every 2 seconds" routine. Basically the same process except instead of holding down the garage door opener's button, you press and release it approximately every two seconds. As soon as the HomeLink sees it as a repeating pattern, the light on the mirror should start blinking and then change to a rapid blink when the programming is complete.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I too have a LiftMaster garage door opener and was unable to get it to work with my '08 Prius. I was about to give up when I found your directions and it works perfectly. Thanks for sharing!

I also have a Lift Master and this is what worked for me after 19 failed attempts with the Prius manual and the Lift Master Manual. 2008 Prius, 2001 Lift Master.

    1) Unplug the opener. (so the door doesn't open/close)

    2) Use the hand/visor held regular transmitter that works with the garage door ..hold the Prius button that you want to open the door and point the front of the transmitter at the mirror with the battery portion away from the mirror and depress the door open/close button on the regular transmitter. The amber/red light on the mirror will eventually blink rapidly.

    3) Plug in the door opener and push the "learn/teach" button on the opener briefly ..the led on the opener will illuminate.

    4) Go to the Prius and hold the button in that you want to open the door. BiNGO! The light on the opener will flash and you are now programmed.

You already know that the car does not have to be running and wasting gas for this operation. :)

    Miss Taz,
I tried what you said and it worked, both my doors work now! Thanks a bunch! BTW it's funny the instructions don't read that way.

I do not have the Homelink on my Prius but my daughter does on her Sienna van. We had the same problem and had to do pretty close to what Miss Taz described.

We found out that we had to hold the garage door opener about 1 inch from the Homelink mirror to start with in order to get the fast blinking to happen (even with fresh batteries). Then I had to go online to the garage door vendor's website, enter the vehicle information and then download their setup instructions.

After completing the Toyota setup instructions and getting the fast blinking, I had to follow another setup procedure from the vendor and do a song and dance on the garage door opener to complete the setup.

The only way I ever got it to work was with FRESH BATTERIES in the remote. Even month old would not work.

I don't know why but I can't get the Homelink to work at all... it never flashes slowly or quickly, just steady red. When I try to hold down buttons 1 and 3 to reset it for 20 seconds, that doesn't make it flash either. Could mine be broken? I just bought the car on Monday, and the only button on the car that looks worn down is homelink button #3, but it makes the red light come on when I press it... it just never flashes!

If I do this, will I have to reprogram the homelink buttons on my other vehicles?

I have a 2010 Prius V with the built in homelink remote. I bought a liftmaster 635lm universal receiver so that I could wire it to a z-wave switch to control my Kwikset z-wave home deadbolt. This way I could use the remote built into the Prius to unlock my front door.
I read the instructions before I purchased and it seemed an easy solution. LOL. It seems that everyone who got the Prius remote to work had an existing garage opener remote. The instructions seemed to indicate it would work w/o the original remote for rolling code systems. Since I am putting the complete system together I don't have the remote since I thought the prius would be my remote. If I have to buy a remote to program the prius I will but I just want to see if anybody has been able to program the Prius with a liftmaster rolling codes system w/o the original remote.
    Thanks,
    Ed

THANK YOU so much for posting this! We just got a new Liftmaster Garage Door Opener as our old Genie died this past weekend. We tried and tried yesterday to program our two 2008 Prius without success. We tried using the instructions in our Liftmaster's manual and in our Prius manual. Thank goodness I found your post today. It worked like a charm with both of our cars. Thanks to you, we can open and close our garage door again using our cars. THANK YOU!

Thank you! Your steps 5-6 worked, first time!!
The Prius nor the Homelink instructions, which involved getting back to the car after pressing the learning button would work.
This was on a 1998 Chamberlian (5100) Security+ with red/orange learn button and yellow LED.
Requires 2 people or a way to power the mirror outside the car next to the door opener...
