How do you set the clock that the GPS uses in a 2006

I'm sorry. I can't answer your question, but I have one for you: How do you change the Nav to tell you when you will be arriving instead of how long it'll take? I have to try to add it up all the time.

On the 2005, there's a time zone option, under MENU then Setup. Although this is somewhat pointless, as it doesn't actually give you an estimated arrival time - as far as I can see the time+date is only used by the calendar function.

GPS systems always use their own clock. The timing signals the GPS satellites are generated from atomic clocks carried on each GPS satellite, which are in turn controlled from a master atomic clock. A GPS receiver uses these signals to dertemine time and position. As a result, the time on a GPS is about as good as you can get, as long as the GPS is getting a signal from the satellites. You never need to set a GPS clock.

That said, the problem you are having is with time zones and daylight savings time. Your GPS receiver is working off of Zulu or GMT time; it doesn't care one bit what time zone it is in or whether you are using daylight savings time. Local times are created by using their offset from GMT. For example, Eastern Time is equal to GMT - 5 hours, so we could get local times from the GPS by subtracting the offsets, but that would be a real pain to do on a routine basis. To avoind making people do that, most GPS map systems have time zones built in and do the offset calculations for you. The GPS figures out where you are, then looks to see which time zone that is, and then calculates the local time from the offset.

There are two places where the local time calculation can go bad. One is if the local time zone is different than what is on the GPS map. This is rare, but can happen, espescially when time zones are redrawn, as they were this year in Indianna. The second place to go wrong is with daylight savings. There really is no way for a GPS to know which areas use daylight savings and which don't, other than a big database, so many GPS systems rely on the user to tell it whether to use daylight savings or not. This option will be found somewhere in the setup menus. I don't have my Prius (get it on Saturday!), so I can't tell you exactly where that option is to be found, but I have never seen a GPS map system without this setting.

To change from minutes to arrival to the Exact time of arrival, all you have to do is touch the screen in that area on the display.

If you can't find a DST setting (I'd be very surprised), then you could just manually set the offset. EST is -5 hours from GMT, so EDT is -4 hours.

Not that I can actually provide you with any useful information of how to do it, since I don't have Nav.

 

Unfortunately I did see that control, but it's on the same screen that the NAV override is on. That's OK for 2004-5, but not for the 2006.

 

Yes, but having the right time in the Nav doesn't help with arrival time at all!

The stupid nav (at least in the 2006) uses the speeds you set in the setup screen! You set the speeds for Residential, Main Roads, and Freeways. That's what it uses, no matter what your actual speed is!

I think it's stupid (and I've said this in a thread in the Audio/Electronics forum). On local highways (not freeways), I drive 60mph but can only set 55 max in the setup screen. For freeways, you can set a max of 70mph.

It's better than no display at all, but hardly more than that. So the "time to arrival" really means "Assuming you drive at the speeds you've entered in the setup screen, you will arrive at such-and-such a time."

 

The same thing happened to me RE: nav clock. There is a setting to activate DST.

I know this is an old thread, sorry but I have the incorrect time in my computer (2 hours ahead) and want to know how to change the offset. I already have the correct time zone and daylight savings time. I just need to adjust the offset and can't find where to do it.

 

And I'd love to know how to have the system display the current time. It annoys me that there's an extremely accurate clock on-board, but the only one you can actually see is the imperfect one in the dash that you have to manually set!
