2008 mpg

I am just barely at 3,000 miles on the odometer on my 2008 (picked it up FOB at 2 miles on the ODO). At first, the mileage was not really great. around 40-45. I think thats because the engine was being broken in. Or, perhaps the computer was learning my driving habits. Just today, I filled the tank, and the computer told me 48.5 and dividing the trip odo by the gas I put in, that showed 49.1.

I've been reading these forums a bit and it seems that the car really starts to shine around the 5,000 mile mark.

I sure would love to reach the huge numbers that the hypermilers get... but i drive for the most part like a normal person, and its amazing even if I drive like a maniac, theres no way I can get under 45.

Probably meant EBH which means Engine Block Heater.

As for me: 2 week old 08 Prius (Canadian version) Base. 3.5l/100km on the dealer tank = 67mpg(US). Now, on the second tank, I'm able to keep this pace:



...which translates to 73.5mpg(US). Won't be able to break the 1000mi/tank barrier, but it's a start.

 

I live in Pinellas county and I am getting the same mileage. I just take short hops skips and jumps in my 2008 package 3. Love the car though. I am 6' 4", and fit great. The camry actually felt more claustrophobic to me.

Was just curious, does synthetic oil really improve mpg?? My toyota FJ only gets about 17, but my new prius gets about 45, but I drive it pretty hard. Also, is it true extra psi helps the prius?? If so, what psi do ya recommend without blowing the tires up?

 

Higher tire pressures improve MPGs noticeably. The safe maximum is whatever is printed on the side of the tire. I use 42/40 front/rear on the original tires (front is higher to handle the greater weight in the front, as recommended by Toyota). Higher pressures give a harder ride and change the handling, so pay attention.

 

Not sure about the Mobil 1. When the auto companies switched from 10w30 to 5w30 the fuel economy gain expected was in the area of 0.5% or for a 50mpg Prius about 0.2 to 0.3mpg. A real number but VERY hard to measure in actual vehicle service. If a 5w30 synthetic like Mobil 1 verses 'normal' motor oil 5w30 were to make a difference I think it would be on the same level (or maybe less). It seems in some Mobil presentations I did see them pushing a 0.5% gain over regular motor oil an another selling point. Again, would be in right direction but you would have a hard time seeing it with normal tank to tank variations in fuel economy.

 

Oh ya, I now has had my 2008 Prius for 10 days. Have about 550 miles on it and have averaged (by the computer) 47.0mpg for the last 230 miles. Will have a better number after my second fill up in a few days. This is a mix of city and highway driving. No real hills in Michigan and the temp has been running about 65-75F. Appears to me that I get the best mileage in the 40 to 50 mph range.

 

I'll just steal your picture as it's pretty much identical to my '08. I typically will run in the mid 50's then hit a weekend where I drive a bit more random (and aggressive) which usually brings me down a mpg or two. I typically will get fuel right around the 500 mile mark with about 52-53mpg displaying on the display. I have 11,500 miles on mine and live in the Phoenix area and drive about 50 miles per day (round trip). I drive about 70% highway with moderate rush hour traffic. Part of the way I'll drive about 30-55 in traffic and the other part I'll get up to around 75-80mph when the road opens up.
