I'm new. I just got a brand new 08 red prius last saturday. I love the car. I left it on by accident for about two days and I went to it this morning and it was on. I was getting 49 miles per galon until I left it on and now is about 40. A pip went down because of it. Anyway, I've been driving the car since last saturday in Hollywood, CA, no freeways and I have about four pips left.

    Wow two days!

I'm not sure whether I'm more impressed that your car wasn't stolen or that your car works perfectly fine!

You quoted 49mpg and 40mpg - is this what you observed by actually calculating mpg = (actual miles driven)/(gallons of gas you've put into the car) or are you going by what the display (MFD) tells you?

Congrats on your new car! ^^

1 PIP in 2 days!!! Amazing....I have wondered how long it could sit unused, but on...I bet you could go over a week on a full tank of gas.

The car worked fine this morning. lol I was so terrified when I realized what had happened! I'm going for what the screen is telling me. I don't know how to do it any other way.

I don't think you did anything bad to it. You didn't run out of gas. I am amazed how little gas is sipped. I am sure it did a force recharge of the battery.

You are lucky your car was still there when you got back to it.

I suspect it depends significantly on several variables. A/C or heat on? Headlights on? Ambient temperature? Car in small emclosed space or out in open air? Windy? Wind direction?

If you turn off everything you can that drains electricity (A/C, headlights, MFD, radio, etc), turn off the heater, and enclose the car in a well insulated box slightly larger than the car. . . .

Then I'd certainly expect you could go at least a week on a full tank of gas.

On the other hand, with the headlights on, and with the car sitting on a cloudy day in a 25 mph headwind at -40 F with the heater set to max heat or on a sunny day a 25 mph headwind 110 F with the A/C set to max cold. . . .

I'd be surprised if the car makes it 2 full days on a full tank.

Always, always, always, *lock the car*. If you left it ON or left a light on or a door or the hatch open it will issue a long warning beep.

I am glad to hear that everything is working fine in your Prius after leaving it powered ON. If I am not mistaken, once I forget to power down and get out of the car the Prius will beep continously and an exclamation point is displayed on the dash.

When I get home, I will be checking this scenario. (been riding my motorcycle for the past 2 days) I'm curious what exactly will happen.

Lately I have been trying to lock the car and finding that I forgot to shut it off. Guess my mind is elsewhere. That is why I always lock it. I left it in IGN on once and killed the 12V battery. At least it was ON when you did it.
