Hey Everyone, I am wondering if there is anyone out there with an idea of where I could obtain a Double din Dash kit to replace the stock stereo. I have found single din which gives me hope but I have not had any luck finding a double din. I am thinking I may have to fabricate. Any thoughts would be appriciated! Mark
AFAIK, the only dash kit available is that 1 DIN + slot from Crutchfield. I think it's fabrication time. Post pics if you go that route because I know there has been interest in stuffing a double-din headunits into the dash.
I went down to a custom shop yesterday and sure enough there is not kit available. They are doing a custom job so it is not going to be cheap but I am really looking forward to the finished product. Apparently they could not disconnect the Factory unit becuase the AC controls stop working so they are rerouting the factory unit to sit unnder the passengers seat. I will have to see if there is a way to get rid of that. I am going to get the car this afternoon so as soon as I get it I will post picks for you. If anyone knows how to remove the factory stereo without losing controls that would be great if you could post a link or instructions here.
It's possible to 86 the factory head unit & still keep the AC working....you have to solder a resistor (maybe 68ohm?) between two wires in the factory radio harness, If I recall correctly. Download the instructions from Metra for their kit for the Prius....it spells it out.
Well here it is after being installed. I am very hapy with the way it came out I think it looks great. If you every do this bring in the install instruction from the metra web site so the installers know about the 68Ohm resistor. I am now battling the company that did the install becuase they had to figure it out on their own and are now charging me an additional $90 for their inexperience. GRRRRRRRRRR. Anyway over all it works and look fantastic!
