Hi Everyone, I often drive my Prius to a local park where I will go running. I do not like to carry my keys with me as I run so I would like to find a place to hide the keys on the Prius out of sight. I haven't find any such location that I like. Has anyone else found a place that you can share with me (that also doesn't trigger the lock to open if a thief tugs on the door handle)? Thanks. Wiia
I don't think you can hide the smartkey within about 3ft of the car, otherwise it will enable anyone to open the door and drive off. So, you'll have to keep it on your person, or hide it farther away. Others have suggested that you can wrap it in aluminum foil, which shields it; but I haven't tried that yet.
I'm not sure I would really trust wrapping it in aluminum foil any more than I would trust wrapping my head in it to stop government mind control. I would remove the battery from it and hide it somewhere in the car. Then, get a copy of the metal key made (that's possible for cheap, right?) and hide that somewhere. Of course, you were probably looking for a simple solution and as I read what I've written, it's far from it.
Part of the solution would be to disable the Smart Key System when you get out of the car to run. Leave your keys inside the car, but bring the metal key with you when you run. It's really small and shouldn't be too much of a pain to have along. Then you use the metal key to unlock the car when you get back, re-enable the SKS and drive away.
Why don't you just put the FOB into a little zippered wrist pouch or very small fanny pack while running and keep it with you? I would be very hesitant to hide it anywhere in fear some moron would come along and find it,
Just to expand on a previous suggestion, the SKS can be disabled by pressing the key button under the steering wheel. After that you don't have to worry about wrapping the fob or pulling its battery. If you are not worried about ultimate security, and obviously your aren't or you wouldn't consider hiding a key, here is what you can do: 1) Turn off the SKS by pressing the button below the steering wheel. 2) Remove the metal key from the fob, or use a duplicate metal key (it's a standard Toyota key blank). 3) Hide the fob in the back by the spare tire, under the plastic pan. 4) Lock the doors. 5) Take the metal key with you, or hide it in the same fashion as any normal car key. In our village many of the residents go south for the winter. A couple of years ago a neighbor's house had the front door blow open, which is never a good thing in a snow storm. The screen door was locked, so I couldn't pull the door shut from the outside. I was going to walk home and get my lock picks, but then I thought they might have hidden a key outside. It took less than five minutes to find their "well hidden" key. Tom
I wasn't saying that I didn't think it would work--just that I wouldn't trust it. You never know when there will be unusual sunspot activity that will somehow allow the government to penetrate my foil hat and read my thoughts. (or get into my car)
