Ok, Sorry, but I am still very new here and this whole forum is so large and I am having trouble finding any info about what this P&G is that you talk about??, Something like Purge and Glide??, Excuse me if I am not remembering the correct term, I have seen this briefly mentioned but now I cannot find the posts and have tried typing it into the search and not finding anything? I know it refers to the way you are driving the car to get the best MPG and I would like to read a post that explains exactly what this P&G is and how to do it??? Thanks for putting up with my ignorance
pulse and glide simply put is as follows: step on gas pedal and accelerate to about 40mph, ie: pulse, remove foot from pedal completely and then ever so lightly step on pedal and observe no arrows to or from the battery, ie; glide... usually can only be obtained when traction battery is near full
With purge & glide, if you twist around far enough to aim backwards before yacking you get a little reaction kick in the forward direction. . _H*
Gliding means coasting without regenerative breaking. If you simply let your foot off the accelerator you trigger regenerative breaking which puts drag on the vehicle and slows it down. This is fine if you want to slow down (e.g., coming to a stop light). But if you want to utilize all of the kinetic energry from the pulse, then you will need to avoid regenerative breaking so that you can coast (glide) as long as possible. Slightly pushing in on the accelerator will turnoff regen breaking and will not engage the ICE (thus no arrows visible on the MFD).
Hey Rockville1, Thanks for your description of Pulse & Glide. I've read a lot of the posts about it, but it didn't quite make sense to me. But now I think I finally understand what it's all about! Good post! Now, if I only had my car so I could try it out!! Connie
Thanks, Connie. I'm glad you found my explanation helpful! Give it try and watch your MPG go up! Optimus, yes - you can P&G with the Prius Classic.
Thanks so much for all that explained this!!! I really do appreciate it and I am going to try this out now on the way home this afternoon..
Yuppers, although the dynamics are somewhat different and it is tricky due to the slightly smaller motor. The engine starts more readily, making the margin between a powered glide (Mostly coasting, but a tiny bit of electric power) and engine power smaller, and the MFD will often display electric power even when the car is gliding. It is very effective though, well worth the effort.

After you learn how to do it, the next step would be to learn when to do it. For me, it's most anytime slow speed driving driving it taking place, and especially anytime downhill driving it taking place (regardless of speed). I crest a hill, and my right foot lifts-and-reapplys everytime. If you have a car that can run on NO gas, wouldn't you try to keep it there as much as possible? That's what P&G is all about to me. With an emphasis on staying with the flow and not making it too appearant I'm doing something different.
I was trying this today, and there seems to be a very small window between the regen kicking in & the motor being on. I also noticed how many times the gas engine goes on & off. Seems like an awful lot.
P&G is the technique practiced by those of us who go anal on breaking the old EPA MPG by a long shot. I'm talking over 80mpg & 1,000 miles on a single tank (over) fill. Even moderate P&G can get you over 70mpg. Warning: MPG over achievement can be adictive
Fuel economy principles: - Accelerate briskly. The engine is most efficient under substantial load. - Gliding (no arrows on the energy display) is better than coasting. - Coasting is better than braking. - Braking is better than stopping. - Stopping is better than crashing :_> - Never use "B", except to avoid riding the brake (for example, when coming down a really long slope)
Actually Richard, Never even use "B" at all ... unless you're going under 20mph. Faster than that can actually decrease mpg, as others have noted already.
Thanks for all that explained what this is, I'm learning how to do it Very cool I think I am becoming addicted to this
Now see what all of you have done to this poor soul? Before long freshmtt will be just like the us. freshmtt, run for your life, and don't look back. It is too late for most of us but, hopefully, there is still time for you. But wait, you already have a Prius. It's too late already. Welcome to the dark side. Bob
Alright, I think I understand P&G in concept. I think it is going to take a minute or two (ghetto for a good amount of time-like a week or two-to the un-initiated). So what's warp stealth? Based on the pics I saw on the cleanmpg link, it looked like one is basically coasting, no? Also, what's a good speed range for using P&G? I saw one say like 25-37mph. 10-12 mph range good (i.e pulse to 40 then glide down to 30 before re-initiating the pulse phase again)?
