Does anyone believe in the Mayan Calendar and the earth's natural cycles of global warming and cooling? According to the Mayans, the year 2012 marks a cycle change often confused with religious predictions of End Of Days. The Mayans believed the earth reverses its cycle every 5,000+ years. A cycle of rapid planetary warming and rapid planetary cooling. The human impact is obvious and significant but is hardly the dominant factor causing climate change. The same crap that's happening now happened 10,000 years ago. I wonder what those people attributed it to?? Big oil? We as humans have a long tradition of attributing major planetary events to our personal religious beliefs and doings, giving ourselves much undue importance as we thoughtfully chew our prosciutto wrapped melon slices and wonder why the dealer didn't install a cargo net at time of purchase. The earth will be fine whatever happens, it is US who may not. And is it our fault? Hardly. Does that make it less bitchin' to drive our Prii. No way! Is Bush still a tool? Most definitely!! Does anyone else believe in the Mayan Calendar and the Earth's opposing 5,000 year cycles?
Don't you mean 2012? The Mayan people were skilled astronomers, and there are interesting ideas reflected in their calendar. It makes a neat garden ornament, but it's absurd to think time will end because we run out of fingers and toes to count it on. And yes, Earth has natural warming and cooling cycles, but the climate change happening now is far beyond that.
So it time ends does that mean that the entire universe becomes static? That's sort of a strange condition to just up and happen. What's their explanation for this? Did they have one?
Who Said Anything About "TIME" Ending?? I certainly didn't. That's the great misconception about the Mayan calendar 2012 date. It has NOTHING to do with "end of days" or "time ending". That's just the religious crazies talking. The great transition in the Mayan calendar is exactly that, a transition. Time is not "ending", it's just rotating in the polar opposite direction. No one's going back in time, it's just the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. Each transition is characterized by extreme/rapid changes in cooling or melting. There are Peruvian glaciers that, due to rapid climate change, have recently melted leaving bright green foliage inside the ice. Just shows how fast the last ice age came upon us. I'm not trying to discount Papa Gore, just trying to show an even bigger picture than most people realize. It's fun to have something to believe in but this crap happens every 5,000 years in the same way, and, just as rapidly...despite our best efforts. For me, a Prius is a MAJOR money saver and not the environmental panacea we wish it to be. The only thing our greenhouse gases are destroying is US! The Earth is perfectly capable of shrugging us off and recovering. And I wouldn't blame her if she did.
Hmmm....Went for a tour of some Mayan ruins when we were in Cancun....Don't remember the tour guide mentioning this...... I'm not really prepared to discuss religious beliefs or lack of same, but I do like certain types of melon. You can buy a cargo net from the PC shop, by the way. Gotta agree with you on this point. I hope you're right about the Earth recovering. She doesn't deserve the treatment we are giving her.
Re: Who Said Anything About "TIME" Ending?? Does that mean we reset everything to 00 and start from scratch?
I'm sorry but this whole thing made me LOL! The Mayan had their share of droughts and floods due to mega-Ninos but their understanding of global climate would have been woefully inadequate to deal with such complexities. I find it interesting that skeptics must know resort to these kinds of arguements. I think the picture is even larger than you realize my friend. It is also MUCH more complex but one thing is certain, when you add more to a system that is already at it's max capacity you will overload it and the system will change. That is a given outcome that any chemist will agree with. Now toss in the degradation of the components that help to cycle these greenhouse gases (trees, soils, ocean organisms, grasslands, etc.)and you further distort the system. This has nothing to due with Al Gore and is not a political issue so please don't go there. If you want to talk science then please give us your scientific opinion and we'll listen. I thought this was a humor thread until I read the first post. To answer the OP's original question: no, I never thought about it. Predicting climate change with the Mayan calendar shows no more promise than using tea leaves or chicken bones. Tom
And current science explains it all?? Ah yes............ And the earth is flat and a salami sandwich with mayonnaise is kosher. It's ALL in your head.
I know it is hard to fully understand the science behind anything if you are not at least trained in the basics of biology, geology, geography, botany, anatomy, zoology, physics, etc. etc.. I would suggest dropping your campaign against science and try learning more about it with an open mind. Otherwise I suggest you stop going to the hospital when sick, stop using any form of technology in your every day life and cast away your clothes except those you yourself make. Do not eat any food in which you yourself do not grow either. Science made it all.
Nothing is wrong with Science and I'm certainly not launching a campaign against it. I just believe Science should realize its own limitations. "The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them." - Albert Einstein
What are the limitations of science? Do you feel science is overstepping bounds in some way by trying to explain climate change or do you have a problem with it's explanation of evolution? I'm not sure I understand your stance on science. May inquire about your background and what you majored in or have studied that has led you to your opinions? I'm just curious why you rail against climate change and the science behind it.
Um, so why can't a salami sandwich with mayonnaise be kosher? As long as the salami is kosher. Mayonnaise has no milk products in it.
