I know that neither car should be used for towing, but I also know that plenty of people have had plenty of luck towing under 1000 lbs with their Prius. So, my question is, which vehicle, a 2004 Prius or a 2004 Honda Civic (manual transmission), do you think is better suited for towing. I'm deciding which one to wire up for the 4x6 (250 lb) Carry On Trailer I'm getting. Is a conventional car like the Civic with a manual transmission better suited for towing than a Prius?
Removem, Lots of people have done just fine towing light loads with their Prius. I have yet to hear of one person who burned their tranny or motor out towing under 1000 lbs. I often wonder why so many people are so goody-goody about this, but thanks for your unasked for warning, which I tried to avoid with my preface to my question.
It probably doesn't matter which car you use for towing. Both can probably do it, but both will probably be bad at it.
Again - a 250lb trailer is nothing. You probably won't even notice it's there! It's only the weight of 1-2 passengers!
these cars are quite rugged. although with automatic transmission you ought to be a bit more careful. 1000lbs is like 6 passengers. if the car has problem with this than it probably is not a car. i have a 88 civic and have done almost anything and everything with it in the past 10 years i have had it. these models are really reliable and can take a very good beating.
